Pakistan’s government says no relief on power bills as protests escalate

Many people in Pakistan say they are being sent higher electricity bills and are refusing to pay them. They say they cannot afford to any more because their spending outstrips their earnings. The higher electricity tariffs have provoked nationwide protests. African Union suspends Gabon’s membership after military coup

The African Union has suspended Gabon following Wednesday’s coup. After seizing power, the military cancelled the election results in which President Ali Bongo was declared the winner. Ukrainian drones target Russian territory in large-scale raids on six regions

Ukraine launched drones against targets in six Russian regions, including an attack on an airport in the western city of Pskov – located near the borders of Latvia and Estonia – where military transport aircraft were reportedly damaged amid explosions and a massive fire. There were also attacks near Moscow that led to flights at several airports being suspended. Russia hit back with air strikes on the Ukrainian capital, killing at least two people. General Nguema named Gabon’s transitional leader after coup

The African Union, the United Nations and France are condemning yet another military coup in Africa – this time in the Central African country of Gabon. President Ali Bongo is under house arrest and the government has been dissolved. Military coup leaders have appointed General Brice Oligui Nguema as transitional leader. The deposed president’s family has ruled the oil-rich but impoverished country for 55 years. There was jubilation across the country but Bongo is asking people to rise up against the coup.
