The burning of leftover straw from harvest season in northern India has long been a big contributor to air pollution.
Efforts to stop it have consistently failed because farmers say there is no other way to clear their land.
Some in Punjab have found a way and they are producing electricity in the process.

These leftover straw can be used as
animal food or we can even built dry sheets or paper
No these straw contain too much of silica which cannot be used to feed animals. Therefore, this is a logical way of disposing straw.

Yeah, if it is rice straw, I would just leave it in the paddy to rot. Here with wheat and corn, we sometimes leave the stalks and roots in place as mulch and to prevent soul erosion.

This use compeats with straw usage elsewhere. Like in animals being.
People here plant crops year round. So it cannot be left on the fields and we dont use insulation for houses like in USA or Canada as it doesn’t get extremely cold.

It costs Rs300-Rs400 /acre for farmers to get rid of the straw this way so that someone can have almost free fuel for their power generation plant. Instead of paying farmers for the straw they charge the “cleanup fee”.

This option has been tried before in California. The project failed due to practical and economic issues. The collection of the straw and transport to power plant is an issue that just doesn”t pay off. Then the control of emissions is a problem. Maybe it can work in India and it does make employment.
It’ll “work” because environmental laws are more lax so cost of environmental pollution is not fully accounted for
