Prof Mahbubani stressed this is NOT to substitute China’s supply chain (BC that would be difficult) BUT to supplement/complement it and provide redundancy particularly with US itching for a contest.
He’s fighting South East Asia’s corner for a share of the pie.
And I think China is fine with that too bc they will/have also been trying to divest into SEA with their own manufacturing in time particularly with increasing cost/standard of living and demographic issues to work out. They are also increasingly pushing higher up the value chain and into innovation.
If anything Vietnam has been a beneficiary of China. Which is why Vietnam has been wise to not be involved with the US (take the bait) to join some ridiculous containment strategy like Australia say.
Why should they? they are benefitting from China. China has been using Vietnam to bypass crazy US ‘sanctions’ and is likely to use Vietnam and its increasingly skilled younger labour pool more.
And China is the number one trading partner and BIG investor into South East Asia with BRI and RCEP which most ASEAN countries are on board.
Its time for the US to step up its economic engagement instead of wasting time trying to stoke Geo-political tensions in the South China Sea nobody in SEA wants.

I see this geo-political battle between the US and China to win the hearts and minds of ASEAN as that of a Tactician(US) and Strategist(China). In the short run, the US may win many battles but in the long run China will win the war….US strategy is inconsistent’ unreliable and short term because every president has different priorities. It is also handicapped by the fact that it is a global power and therefore its resources are stretched unlike China who is only a regional power.
