This sort of thing goes on in many places in the US, although the sociopath-level depravity may not be quite as bad. For instance, for many decades I have known about it in the shrubbery and small tree nursery industry located about 35 miles East of Cleveland, OH. We never heard of feds raiding those farms, and always wondered who was being paid off to keep them away. A nearby town, Painesville OH has had some raids in the poor neighborhoods looking for out-and-out Undocumented (not the same thing); but the farms themselves where the majority of workers live temporarily, not to my knowledge. They all need to be checked periodically for proper documentation on the guest workers (and their working conditions monitored), as long as the owners don’t fear scrutiny, nothing will change.

I once witnessed at least twenty field hands exit the back of a small pick up truck on outskirts of Coffeeville, Ms. I have no illusions of how plantation owners treat their help.
