World-renowned paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey, known for his fossil-finding and conservation work in his native Kenya, has died at 77, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced.
Leakey, whose groundbreaking discoveries helped prove that humanity evolved in Africa, remained energetic into his 70s despite bouts of skin cancer, kidney and liver disease.
Born on December 19, 1944, Leakey was destined for palaeoanthropology – the study of the human fossil record – as the middle son of Louis and Mary Leakey, perhaps the world’s most famous discoverers of ancestral hominids.

Chinese demand for ivory is killing African elephants today.
What’s been killing the elephants for the last 120 years is the idea that the lands the elephants occupy should be transformed into large scale industrial farms to export commodities. Quite a few “ecologists” picked a weapon and killed tens of thousands of the creatures with “good intentions” (like stopping desertification, or killing the tse-tse fly), but the desired result by some elites was to starve the locals and take their lands.
@Mar Lan Maybe you should do more research boss. The elephants and other big five animals started reducing in numbers after the white came into the African land because of the advance weapons they possessed. There’s a reason why millions of Europeans travel thousands of miles just see a wildlife in their natural habitats. Zoos started operating during the white man’s era. They even kept human zoos. Take a moment to think about that.

That’s because he wasn’t a colonialist who seeks to perpetuate the oppressive system and unjust domination of society by a white minority. So yea, he was respected as a Kenya. As opposed to some large landowning third generation white person whose very existence is to perpetuate the colonial system and maintain white domination of resources and wealth. Bit of a difference, and one worth exploring.

Its also considered racist at least in Europe to refer to people as white or black.
Kenya was a British colonial state, so its more correctly to just refer to them as Anglos which they are.
Most people in United States of america are also Anglos.

The leaky history is amazing, His Parents created archeology as a science, they made and set the standard for how to discover our history.

As a student I was introduced to him via his work as an anthropologist. Amazing legacy he and his family have left for human history. RIP 🙏

Great anthropologist, but by opposing controlled commercial hunting he destroyed the wildlife and opened the country to poachers.
I first read about the Leakeys in the 1970’s in a Readers Digest article. Been interested in anthropology ever since.

As a child in the early 50s, I remember reading about Louis Leakey, his son & his wife. Their discoveries were amazing. They spent their lives in Africa & the elder Leakey discovered one of the oldest human upright remains.

RIP Dr. Richard Leaky, Thank You for everything you did for me! Dr. Leaky was one of my advisors on my Anthropology Graduate School Advisory Committee in 1978. I had the honor of meeting him & speaking with him many times back then. His contribution to the the field of Anthropology will never be forgotten.
Thank you Dr. Leaky for all your work. You will be missed.

RIP good fellow. I have followed his father and the family since the 1970s. He was a good man and when I lived in Kenya during the 80s he was the greatest protector of wildlife in the whole country. Mungu akubariki katika safari yako mpendwa.
