It was a war infamous for its cruelty, mutilations and child soldiers paid for by exports of so-called “blood diamonds” mined by slave labour.
The war ended 20 years ago in Sierra Leone, but the recovery and reconciliation processes have been slow.
The government is focused on fighting corruption, improving infrastructure and reducing unemployment, but significant hurdles and divisions remain.
Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reports from the capital Freetown, where, despite vast mineral riches, its eight million people remain some of the poorest in Africa.

You think tribal people are going to form a functioning country?
HAHAHAHAHA how stupid
This was the plan all along
May Allah give peace in Sierra Leon.
Ameen 🥰🥰
Islam doesn’t give peace
@Abortion rights would’ve saved us from you actually the American import into Liberia next door , the president at the time , sent hundreds of thousand of soldiers to fight in the nation for blood diamonds , idk what he was
@Abortion rights would’ve saved us from you bcz you didn’t found peace doesn’t mean it don’t give. Go and read it in Quran.
Palm oil🤮
We always love Sierra Leone ❤️
🇧🇩💚🇸🇱
Asian man is the GM of the factory. Black Africans are the ones doing the carrying and packing. You could go back 50 years and you could still see the same situation across Africa.
We Africans are our own worst enemies
🇳🇪 + g
Love for Sierra Leon from 🇱🇷
Yessir liberia
Liberia power
@mariat t yes power to africa
Nun Her spouse at the gates is respect
when she sits with the elders of the country.
Africa gonna Africa.
Tribal gonna tribal
Primitives gonna primitive
Loserrrr. You are a bad person
Why is Indian dude the manager?
@1234qwer I think he wants a foreigner to come to his country, invest his money, but then just hire some random local person – even if that person isn’t qualified to do the job. This is the mentality that keeps Africa poor. 1 person gets a job in a high position and rather than hiring the most qualified person, he is expected to hire his nephew, brother in law or someone else from his own tribe. Even if the person he hires doesn’t know the first thing about the job he’s going to be donig.
@J K. Go tell that Nonsense to the Japanese and Chinese then.
Leave us Africans alone. We dont need foreigners nor your money. Stay in your own countries
Because he is Sierra Leoneans. There is a big community of Sierra Leoneans with indian migratory history (like in many parts of the world)
@sl observer Indians are Indian. Not Sierra Leonean. Not African
How are they going to do it with successive enept and corrupt governments?. 75% of the population is in the agricultural business, but they cannot feed 10% of the population. Investing in Agriculture will have 75% of employment, but there is no appetite for governments to do. All they do is stealing and leave the masses to suffer. How could you spend two hundred & fifty million dollars per year importing rice, while the country is full of potential to even export if invested in the sector?. All they want is handouts,so they can share with their families and friends.
I am liberian and love Sierra Leone. 🇱🇷🇸🇱 I hate Arab and European supremacists invaders.
I can farm it how can I
Every 60 seconds in Africa….
A minute passes.
once Africa was a colony of Europe. Now it s becoming Asian colony
The neighboring Charles Taylor govt was a wreck left America and ruled their nation terrible . Tried to import a diamond civil war to add a govt just as bad in here . Good to see it has moved on that foreign born qualified workers administrators can live in decent way and help the progress
My professor was a contractor there and he said the nation needed competent leaders who can invest some of mineral wealth into roads and power plants like coal stations
Corruption and low infrastructural development is still a huge problem in this our country 🙄 😒 🤔
They said they are fighting corruption whilst they doing the act, it a shame we voted a Government who can’t afford to make life worthy to live in the country, rather they enriched themselves, travel a lot and seize the freedom of speech from us 💔🇸🇱😥
It’s really really sad 😢🇸🇱🇸🇱🇸🇱 but things are improving now
They need a leader like Lee Kuan Yew
My Sierra Leone 🙏🙏🙏
The consequences of war are enormous. It will take time before they get there
💓from🇳🇬
Native Sierra Leoneans better get serious on not selling out their country to Eurasians.
It is foolish to think that any Indian, Arab, Chinese, or European has your people’s best interests at heart.
Get serious on keeping your land for yourselves
@Tvs And what exactly have you done for Sierra Leone?
@Chal Goode I’m not the one who is pontificating about what they should do in their country unlike you who have done nothing for the country and have ZERO intention of doing anything for it, but presumptiously think you can tell them what they should do. Again be quiet couch imperialist!
@Tvs I think that you ought to look at yourself in the mirror real quick before making any of those charges.
It could easily be reflected upon you as being exactly what it is you accuse me of being. I’m simply stating the facts.
Seems like you’re the one here with an ulterior agenda as pertaining to Africans getting serious on remaining separate from eurasians.
@Chal Goode see, I see right through your racist agenda. It has nothing to do with the wellbeing of Africa or Sierra Leone and has everything to do with your racist, self-absorbed desire to pursue some utopia of black supremacy to make a point to the white man. So you push this anti-Europe/anti-China bs in a bid to make it seem as if you care when really its just a way for you to sneak in and take over as some saviour whilst pushing your propaganda. Africans are waking up to your bs. If you really cared, you’d have been in Sierra Leone or other African countries 10 years ago to help rebuild. Now you see that Africa offers unique opportunities to buy prime lands and make strategic business investments and you’re just afraid that the so called Eurasians will beat you to it. Fake fake fake concern.
@Chal Goode You are correct, it is extremely frustrating to see contracts and opportunities given many Indian, Arab, Chinese, or Europeans. A lot of African business ventures are blocked due to corruption and the past and present government bodies are to blame. The Water Quay is a whole issue in its self and a huge obstacle to progress for many of us who are native to Sierra Leone and able.
Did independence really help Sierra Leone?
God Bless the people of Sierra Leone… Beautiful country … Beautiful people with amazing spirits….
🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏
Why would you always only talk about the civil war in international news media when talking about Sierra Leone. Yes, it is important to remember, but the only thing people think about when they hear Sierra Leone is the Civil War and chopped hands, because eeeverytime international media report, they will mention or even focus on the war….
Because the effects are still being felt today
All owned by Lebanese or Indians. Shame on us. Go to Ghana and Nigeria and see
We wuz phorahos 😁😁😁
Good luck for Sierra Leone 🇸🇱… never go back to the dark days… STATE-BUILDING can never be perfect or complete but the secret is to keep changing and perfecting it continuously…
There is always some light skinned dude in charge of these . Never an African.
What was the point of this report? Just another news media pimping our history to their audience. The war has been over and the country is Democratically stable for the past 20yrs. Sierra Leone is struggling like most African countries, war or not. Many progress has been made and continue to be made. The Ebola and Corona outbreaks has been catastrophic for the country’s economy growth. Before then Sierra Leone economy was growing at 10% per year. There country is very safe and peaceful, albeit corruption still a problem…Pease find something else to report next time they send you to Sierra Leone…there are so much to talk about..good or bad.
Allowing a foreign company(India) to takeover and distribute your natural resource. Why can’t the SL government invest in its own entrepreneurs? I will answer. They cannot get upfront kickbacks from the country own money. They rather get peanuts for their families and friends while Jolak contaminate the beautiful rivers.
You welllcome to saleone the heaven on earth 🌎
Sierra Leone just similar to Nigeria
APC 2023 !!! Maada bio too useless ruining My country.
