Waving flags and singing the national anthem, thousands of Ukrainians braved the winter cold to march across the capital Kyiv to show unity in the face of a feared Russian invasion.
“Panic is useless. We must unite and fight for independence,” said student Maria Shcherbenko on Saturday, expressing a sentiment similar to that voiced by Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier in the day.

it is the US that is pushing the war propaganda. Russia is no butcher. Together with the Chinese/Russian alliance have already won the second half of the 21st century against western hegemony. So this alliance has no intention of losing credibility on the world stage and appear as slaughterers. The US is behind the curve on this one so they are scaring all the populations about “attacks” and so forth. What is being challenged here is US/western military hegemony as well as western cohesion.

Zelenskyy is right. Nobody wants any form of panic in Ukraine and elsewhere. However, nobody can help it especially as Russia has been going on a vengefully genocidal tirade against Europe and the world.

And you are right, it’s very unlikely that they will be able to prevent Russia from conquering them militarily, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be able to prevent Russia from subjugating them. Russia can not occupy Ukraine indefinitely, an occupation is extremely costly, and with Western sanctions on top is not something Putin could ever afford for more than a few months, maybe half a year. They might try installing a pro-Russian government but it would have no legitimacy whatsoever, and will most likely be resisted through non violent means by the overwhelming majority of the country, which will have seen even more death and destruction of their homeland at Russia’s hands and feel ever more hostile towards its representatives.
The international community meanwhile will be horrified and Russia’s image will be forever besmirched. Putin can claim all he wants that such an outcome would be NATO’s fault or the United States’, but when people see a picture of a Russian tank in Kyiv nobody will be thinking “OMG look what America has done!”. The invasion will rally the West and boost NATO, which soon will be even larger and even closer to Russia’s borders, despite a standoff that was specifically meant to contain NATO. The situation might drag out for a year or two, maybe even longer. But it is very hard to imagine that Russia could hold on to them for much longer than that. Their puppet government will eventually flee or get overthrow, Ukranians will have wrought their freedom from their much larger and powerful neighbor, and Russia’s defeat in a conflict that will have cost them a fortune and lost them all goodwill will be utterly evident to them and the world.
I can’t come up with a better outcome than something like this for Putin and his lieutenants, and I wonder if he might try annexing Ukraine (as he seems to be doning in Belarus) instead of just trying to subjugate them, but I lack the knowledge to imagine how such a scenario might unfold and play out. It would certainly elevate the conflict to a whole different level and represent an even riskier gamble for Putin, who is well aware that Afghanistan greatly contributed to what he considers the worst tragedy of the 20th century, the collapse of the Soviet Union.
He was really outplayed this time, I don’t remember him ever having been corned in such fashion. Ukranians deserve all the credit for that, given that NATO would never have been able to stonewall Russia’s demands if Ukraine had not explicitly asked the West not to make any concessions that would deprive them of their right to self-determination. So in a sense their inspiring courage already scored them the first victory, by dealing Putin a memorable blow right from the get-go.

I have a question for Russians and those who support them.
Ukraine has 250.000 troops and about 100.000 veterans + about 100.000 self-defence forces. Your army is superior in technical meaning but UA Army is in the defending position which is a huge advantage.
In a full scale war, an offensive side should have 3:1 advantage in numbers.
So my question is: are you really ready to send to my country more than a million of young Russian men, where at least half of them would be killed? Geopolitics is cool, but are you sure you’re ready to send your sons and brothers to death?
And what for? To throw some bombs to the first Christian city in Kyiv Rus? To bomb Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, the church built in the time when Moscow didn’t even exist?

As a Russian American, my take is that there will be no large scale war, or any scale war, for that matter. Nobody wants it. The world, including the US and EU begin to care about Ukraine only if it is in the spotlight. Where was Europe all these years while the Donbass mess was festering? Nobody wanted to deal with it. This is what Putin really wants, for whatever reason, to keep the spotlight there, presumably to score political advantage. In the short term he will continue to raise his pitch to keep the world listening. The dog that barks rarely bites. Practically, I am more interested to know what people of DNR/LNR will do.
I don’t understand why would Ukraine, it’s leaders and some people be so thoughtless. If they want development, more association with west, focus on that. Why bring NATO issue up. I think it’s stupid or they really want conflict.

Ukraine as a nation today (not a people or culture, but as a modern nation with its current borders) is actually a portion which is Polish (to the west), Maldovan (to the south west), Tatar (Crimea and south although drastically reduced in numbers over the last couple centuries) and real Ukrainians (to the east) to whom Russians are their decendents and they are actually the same people.
Ukraine has never been a coherent country, empire or nation since its Viking led origins and has always been a border frontier land from which the name Ukraine oeiginates. Every neighbouring empire referred to that zone between empires as The Ukraine.
Ukraine the state tofay with its current borders shifted Westward after WW2 and should not exist. The Pols have been historic enemies of Ukrainians and what is happening today is the modern state is being torn apart by Polish and Western wannabee Slavs who are, as has always been, historical enemies of Ukrainians and their decendents the Russians.
The West is further exacerbating traditional Slav tribal rivalries to weaken and destroy any hope of a Slav rise along with the East.
And Ukrainians are just dumb and proud enough to fall victim to global strategic war games.
If Ukraine knew what was good for itself, it would go 100% nuetral or not make enemies of their own people the Russians. But there are too many Polish traitors within Ukraine to keep it from imploding.
