Moldovan President Maia Sandu convened an urgent meeting of the country’s Supreme Security Council after two blasts damaged Soviet-era radio masts in the breakaway region of Transnistria.
The incidents on Tuesday came after local officials reported several explosions at the state security ministry in the city of Tiraspol at 6pm (15:00 GMT) the day before, on a public holiday for the Orthodox Easter.
Moldovan authorities are sensitive to any sign of growing tensions in Transnistria, an unrecognised Moscow-backed sliver of land bordering southwestern Ukraine, especially since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

The “trans” part means “across”, or “beyond”, just like we have in “transatlantic”, “transport”, “transgender”,”translate”, “transaction”, etc. Transylvania = across sylva. Sylva is the word that romans used for forests/woodlands. This also inspired a city name in US: Pennsylvania :). Transnistria = across Nistru (i.e. the river Nistru). Hope this helps.

@Nathan Levesque No. i was just clarifying above that Moldova (the country) is not keeping, inviting or welcoming the Russian army in Transnistria. That army has been stationed there for a while now, due to conflict and theoretical “peace keeping”. We can only witness the “peace”. That territory is uncontrolled by Moldova – they declare themselves independent, as we know. So Moldova, in intent and act, is neutral.
@MOB The people of transitria declared independence on their own without russian backing during Soviet times as they didn’t want to join Romania with Moldova. From what I understand Moldova started the conflict by entering transitria to stop the separatists. The Russians entered later on to help the transistrians.

Russia doesn’t need to take Odessa first to take Transnistria. They can sail their navy up an estuary and join up with the 1500 Russian troops already on the ground there. Nobody is going to resist them. There are no NATO ships in the Black Sea since the beginning of the Ukraine invasion. Moldova is weak, it has an army of 6000 troops and is not in NATO, so won’t do anything when thousand of Russian troops pour into Transnistria.
@aftonline if Russia we’re moving ships to that estuary Ukraine could move the missiles to intercept them. It would be in their interest to keep Russia from moving troops to Moldavia.
@mike wilson A lot of things that would be in Ukraine’s interest may be theoretically possible but in the fog of war may not eventuate. I try not to listen to the propaganda on either side. Ukraine is not out of the woods yet in the Donbas. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out over the next few days. It may be that Russia may prefer to send their troops south if they are losing rather than send them back home to Russia where it will be obvious to the local population that Putin has been lying to them about their successful special military operation.

If Moldova is attacked by Russia, Romania will help Moldova. Romania is a member of NATO, so there could be a war between NATO and Russia.
There was a war in 1992 between Moldova and Transnistria since Moldova wanted to join Romania. However, Romanians said they would not take Moldova in without Transnistria. It was Moldova who attacked the independent territory to claim it and meet the Romanians requirements. Of course Russia helped Transnistria to withstand the attacks which resulted in a failed operation of Moldova. Today, there’s the same situation, just in a little different context. NATO wants Russia to declare war on the Alliance by provoking it. Ukrainians, Moldovans and Romanians joined to create such sh*tshow. Even Ukraine, the country which has nothing in common with Transnistria these days, is announcing that it’s ready to conquer the territory. Russia will probably help Transnistria again. By doing so, Russian army will most likely have the confrontation with Romanian army, a member of NATO. This is the exact way they will drag Russia into the conflict with NATO, which will help as the excuse for Europe to begin a full scale war with Russia. They just want it so bad and are ready to brainwash every European so the EU and NATO are presented as the “good ones”. Everybody with brains knows the truth and that this whole situation is f*cking scary.

The current situation now in Ukraine is getting worse. Each does not want to give in in Russia’s demand. Unfortunately, Russia does not posses a good reputation among democratic countries. All claiming to protect German-speaking citizens.The same thing happens today. Russia claiming the same thing plus to protect Russian-speaking people from GENOCIDE by Ukrainians. Odessa is going to be the key battleground. If that falls then the Russians will go on to Moldova. But it remains to be seen if Russia’s military can topple Odessa, which will be heavily armed and fortified by the time the Russians get there…
