In Kenya, demonstrators on the streets of Nairobi are showing their frustration ahead of August general elections.
People are unhappy about rising prices, stagnating wages and a large national debt.
Politicians are using this campaign season to promise to fix the economy. But many voters are not convinced, saying they are disillusioned and do not trust their leaders.
Economists say a new government will find it hard to lessen the burden for most people.

Express way funded by China? This journalist lacks facts
what is the essence of voting in political thieves into office
Not going to feel SIMPathy for a woman who complains about costs yet has four children at home. (Nevermind whether or not the father is around.) PLANNING involves family planning.
She does have four children. Like, you can’t just have two?
@Mr. Skeleton you can’t fathom r grasp empathy from you’re privileged life
@Sky Mile Learn English, kiddo. More importantly, empathy is not something to be “grasped.”
Why is it that the local media is not covering this!
Kwani Niko nchi ngine 😹.but hio ni protest kidogo Sana
@Oirere Omanga ad si ya leo ni ya kitambo last week….
China owns Kenya.
They own most of Africa.
Africa is the richest C in the world not the poorest what evil uk french belgium lords and pals stole murderd put their evil puppets in

@Devyle Austine Just watching farmers around the world going organic because they can’t afford fertilizer.
Democracy = big spending and high debt.
🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪 🙏
Africa unite
Rise up
Let’s follow suit like Sri Lankans
Kenya is rich, but it became soccer filed for westerners. Why?Westerners uses Kenyan government Neighboring countries with good resources to steal behalf of them. One example, is that Kenya try to steal Somalia Resource gas and oil on Lowe jubland which is Somalia territory 100% until ICJ ruled over Somalia what Kenya claimed its their territory. Not wonder if Kenyan people become the next Sirlanka people living in government palace.
Kenya didn’t try to steal anything. We have a territorial dispute with Somalia government. That issue cannot be solved by a foreign body but by Africans themselves. There needs to be a mutual agreement between Kenya & Somalia about the maritime dispute. The fact that we went to a foreign body to solve our problems is a big Shame to us Africans. This issue can only be solved by Africans. Nobody else.
Somali brothers, Kenya is not your enemy. We need you to understand that clearly. We are peaceful neighbours who gave some issues that need to be resolved together 🇰🇪🇸🇴
2l cooking oil used to be sh. 220, it’s now sh. 500. My grocery bill has doubled. I’m not going to waste the money for fare to go to my polling station.
Catherine soi, stop reporting lies just to keep your job at aljazeera. You should be a shamed of yourself. We are sick & tired of African based journalists who come up with bogus stories for fear of loosing a job at aljazeera. Kenya is not in crisis as compared to sri Lanka & will never reach that level. We are a food secure country & can never run out of basic necessities & amenities. This negative reporting of Africa needs to stop. We are absolutely fed up.
@Watchman1 The waycher1 no we are not in as bad a crisis as sri lanka, but still broadcasting to the whole world helps because it puts pressure on the government and other relevant stakeholders to take action, if the crisis in sri lanka wasn’t broadcasted then the president would have probably used excessive force to silence the protesters and maintain his hold on power, he most likely chose to quit because he knew the international community is watching, sometimes you have to speak out for change to happen, if a person is undergoing domestic violence nobody will know unless they expose their situation to outsiders, that way even the perpetrator will change their ways for fear of action being taken against them. So yea let’s put our dirty laundry out there
@VanAllen Dude!!! You are confusing things. Stick to the point.
The whole world is going thru an economic crisis brought about by COVID & Ukraine war. From America to Bangladesh. The economic symbiosis broke down becoz of COVID & sanctions against Russia.
The sanctions on Russia is having a adverse effect on the world economy. Europe’s economy is struggling becoz of a self inflicted wound thru sanctions against Russia. They depend on Russia’s gas.
Wheat production, a very important commodity has been affected with the sanctions against Russia. A majority of the world depends on Russia’s wheat.
This symbiosis is extremely important. Kenya on the other hand does not depend on many countries for its basic commodities like wheat, cooking oil etc. Most of our petroleum comes from oil producing African countries eg Angola, Nigeria,Togo, Benin etc.
Africa is not adversely affected by the global economic crisis as much as the rest of the world. We are somewhat insulated from the chaos.
@Watchman1 The waycher1 listen, I’ll keep it brief. It’s the global market that’s harming the world, not just supply & demand. The price of oil is over $100 US, so why would oil companies sell for less? Same with grain & other goods. The west is managing because all the value added goods like software, advanced industry, etc. But not everyone has that to rely on. That’s why even the USA which could be oil independent if it wanted to is going through high prices right now for example.
You think sri Lanka just went in crisis like that no keep in my mind he have a very high debt the kenya shillong I’d losing value to the dollar making imports more expensive and many more sorry to say Kenya is going to crisis really soon
Kenyans must overthrow their corrupt leaders like Sri lankans did
The devils breakfast sounds scrumptious
So Al Jazeera is just like a rebranded BBC with darker skinned minions?
Uhuru na project yake wamalize waende
All these countries (pak,Srilanka,kenya,..
are trapped in Chinese debt)
I just hope the rest of the world is watching. I’m 56 and my husband and I have absolutely no savings. We are lucky to not have a mortgage, however with the rising costs and a number of children, we too just can’t seem to save anything. Trying the veggie garden thing ( a swamp at the moment) and other self sufficiency ideas. Worried, but I know things can always get worse. I think it’s especially difficult for retirees and near retirees, I know to focus on the long term but the anxiety when you’re supposed to be retiring in 3-5 years is exhausting.
keep buying gas like a sucker lol I bought an EV 6 yrs ago because I no longer want to be a prisoner to oil and gas companies lol
YEAP,I’m sharing this one for sure…i am a student from kenya and i hate to see my mother stuggle to pay my fees and also feed a family of 5. i am stuck in a situation where i am thinking of leaving school, getting myself a nduthi just to ease her burden or continuing with studies with the hopes of better days at the cost of seing my mother stressed. what is life in kenya i ask?

Congratulations Catherine, am very impressed
In the philippines, everything has doubled. And yet, all the poor people are rich & no one is complaining. They’re even praising the price hikes! 3x in 2 months! For locally produced goods!! Wth is going on???? I understand the world’s frustration over prices, they are soaring. But philippines, no complaints, no protests, people are buying like they’re overflowing with money!
Catherine Soi always reporting on slums. All for a job.
A narrative must be maintained
Si ata siku moja aende roysambu ama south b kwani mtaa ni kibera tu? Nairobi has multiple formal settlement more than slums.
Same with Ethiopia….these governments r borrowing from so many foreigners and, steal that money ….Take the politicians cars, houses, other assets to pay 💰 their debts….
The African voters don’t seem to understand that the people they vote into offices mess up their countries. If they did, they would hold the political class accountable for the mess they create.
Catherine Soi please do your research properly. The expressway is a PPP project. The government did not borrow a loan for it.
