At least 19 people have been killed after a storm in Kentucky caused severe flash floods and mudslides. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said six of the victims are children. President Biden declared the region a major disaster zone and is promising to send federal aid. Crews are out with dogs searching for bodies in the devastation.

I wish these news stories would give tips on what to do in a situation such as this. I’m sure many don’t know. It could save future lives.
The only thing you can do is have a bag ready for each person to leave with and have a solid plan already in place as to where you are going to go if the water rises.

Listen to local weather alerts and evacuate if told to do so. Probably wouldn’t hurt to have family documents, passports, import phone #s that you normally keep in a drawer, just put them in a ziploc bag and back in the drawer. Lifejackets, even $2 pool noodles can help in a pinch.

So many friends and family impacted by this; sold our home in Allen, KY two years ago. I’ve witnessed the Levisa reach high levels many times over 30+ years yet never enough to reach our home, had my family and I remained in the region we’d lost it all, seen the photos of my old street and home…I know all these areas…passed through many of these communities…just devastating. This event appears to be far worse than the 77′ flood that impacted most of eastern Kentucky. Thankfully all family and friends are accounted for, even those I don’t speak with because of their political affiliation, yet I’m thankful they’re safe…seen a lot of negative comments across the board, people ridiculed for religious beliefs, offering of thoughts and prayers, etc. Frankly, I’m seeing the same vitriol from folks who’ve blasted the MAGA movement…and rightfully so…turning into the the same thing you chastise…well…it’s heartbreaking.
I loath the MAGA base and Trump….just difficult comprehending all the hate…one thing I know about Kentuckians…regardless of political BS…when a tragedy happens communities and people don’t hesitate for a moment to help each other out. I live in Lexington currently, having recently purchased property in a rural community in the region not located in a flood zone…we’ll be returning to our roots this weekend to lend a hand anyway, anywhere it’s needed.
Good on you, while I disagree on politics all the time as well… it is good folks that keep a community safe and thriving… not its politics or politicians. I hope for future well thinkers and those who can get past barriers to help those who need it.
