South Korea’s capital Seoul will start phasing out basement apartments – after three people died in the flats during flooding this week.
The tiny dwellings are usually rented out to people on low incomes.
Clean-up and recovery efforts accelerated in South Korea’s greater capital region on Wednesday as skies cleared after two days of record-breaking rainfall that unleashed flash floods, damaged thousands of buildings and roads and killed at least 10 people.
Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride reports from the capital, Seoul.

South Korea is a perfect country. Just perfect. I had a few vacations there. Good luck, Seoul and the whole South Korea!
Guess you didn’t watch the movie “Parasite”
@Long Term Dylan Dylan did you get paid by the Chinese?
We need to expedite our use of renewable energies, phase out fossil fuels, and plant more trees. It’s not a joke, people.
That’s not going to help do anything!!!!
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
Jesus Christ is coming soon, soon this world will be no more. Today if you hear His voice harden not your hearts. Repent from your sins and accept Jesus today!!
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
Revelation 22:12

Luke 21:25-28
King James Version
And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

I do hope you ALL get help…..all those Fat Cats that invest in that area could help out these people
Take care 🇰🇷❣️
So it’s in every country, the government only cares about the rich.
Thats a lot of waste. So sad for korea. Wishing for the bestcof korea
Fell for Korea as a Filipino with wet season we experienced flooding also almost every year but what happened to South Korea is worst I can’t imagined how they feel devastated I am a fan of Kdramas that’s why Im familiar with the places in Korea..Kerp safe everyone God is watching us…
This flooding was my greatest fear because my room is also semi-basement. Luckily our area has good landscaping so we didn’t experience this. I just wonder what will happen 5 years later when they ban this kind of housing because rentals are so expensive.
Low income basement apartment residents will be moved to public housing or given subsidies to afford an apartment. That’s the plan right now anyway
@Tiffany I hope so!
여기서 이 ㄹ ㅓ면 우야노
You think you have 5yrs, “hugh”!?
If you don’t live around GangNam or shinlim dong, you don’t need to worry too much, I think. Historically (for about 1,000 years) GangNam was shunned place for residential area due to frequent flooding. Half basement housings are concentrated in the vicinity of Seoul.
He is good at recovery just dm him ☝️ and see what I saw ,I can’t just stop rejoicing for the good work he has Don for me all thanks to this ☝️ guy.
I’m going to Seoul in two weeks, hopefully things will have returned to a modicum of normality by the time I arrive. South Korea looks amazing.
@autumn Ikr!
I hardly doubt that
On my street theres still so much mess. Maybe dont worry about how the country looks and help out
@autumn there’s not a lot I can do from thousands of miles away
It would be ok. Everything happens fast in Korea. Recovery will be fast as well. If you stay within the tourist attractions, it should be fine. Consult the concierges of the hotels before departing to the next area. Check the weather and have alarms turned on about natural disaster warning. There were a lot of warning messages sent out during this flash flood warning.
Korean government is lacking in disaster preparedness action. Stop your stupid k-pop concert first.
Basement as an apartments is really dangerous. Praying for the dead and affected koreans.😥🙏
We experienced that everyear….but life’s goes on..God bless south korea our brothers…
😘🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🇺🇸🔥🌹💗💜😇☝🏼🌕빙
When a disaster happen the thing we should do is helping each other but sadly my neighbor becomes very ignorance to helping each other, busy protesting and blaming each other, i wish i can live somewhere with warm hearth peoples around
Capitalism is anti-human.
Korean government we thought they are good but the reality is like this 🥺
Jesus is coming back soon repent and believe that he died on the cross for your sins no time left
🥺🙏🏼✝️
So korean government is no better than us 😏
“Recovery underway” seems the Koreans are extremely efficient. This recovery would take many months if happened in the states.
When flooding is normal in the Philippines. Imagine we experience that 20 times in every year in different area in the Philippines.
Anyway keep going korea
20번씩?;;;;;;
Wow. I’ve been agonizing over another flash flooding in Gang Nam in 10 years. People are criticizing the current mayor for cutting budgets for the sewage route cleaning. I hope things change for the better for people in Philippines.
In my country floodings and earthquakes are constant. Welcome, SK, to your new reality. 😁 evacuation centers is a must and disaster teams in each municipality.

Korean government after a natural disaster: we have to fix the issue right away and make sure our people have safer housing and make sure our city infrastructure are upgraded.
America government after a natural disaster: thoughts and prayers for our own but let’s send billions of dollars to Israel and Ukraine.
and rebuild the destroyed houses after a hurricane in the exact same prone position again…
The States would be nothing without geopolitics. Also I thought Americans didn’t like the government to pout its nose in their life??? Thoughts and prayers are enough.
Question…. Does this typical flooding happen regularly around this time of year?
Sandii No, July and August in Korea usually rain a lot in general but this year they said it just was bucket pour raining consistently as if sky had a big hole. It is unusual for them to flood this bad.
Presumalbly This is from bad draining problem in Gangnam..
Finally South Korea which is famous for having the most racist people in the world, and now their country can be flooded too..
Poor country,poor people
There are poor people in every country.
It’s just a landscape of poor houses in Korea, and it’s definitely not a poor country.
right and they built a city like if it was a pool…desperately !
The president is there only because of views and to appreciate. But THEY DON’T CARE about their pour people! 🥲
The government did the same thing in china when there was a 🔥 in a basement apartment they r pretty hard to get out and can be dangerous when there’s a fire 🔥
Lots of work ahead but I know the people in Seoul Korea will accomplish this ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️💯
🙏
my heart goes out to these ppl, the govt need to do more then to phase out basement places, they need to create places for low income families that is adequate and safe
Allah reham keray
