The North won the American civil war and was able to keep the union together. I don’t believe anyone was trying to force the Americans to tolerate the secessions of their southern states. 4 years? 32 years? Infact it was probably 29 years if their had been no coronavirus. The ultimate fate of the UNITED states after the American civil war offers a useful precedent and an example where the forcible reconstruction of a union can be done and hold over time to turn out well for all concerned.
