This time next year, Qatar is due to host the FIFA World Cup.
In preparation, the Gulf nation is testing its infrastructure with the FIFA Arab Cup, being held right now.
The World Cup stadiums are part of Qatar’s most ambitious project yet, with almost all of them built a year ahead of schedule.
Their designs represent the past and present and are tailored to unique needs of a country with fewer than three million people hosting FIFA’s biggest tournament.
Al Jazeera’s Sara Khairat reports from Doha, where she looks at the inspiration behind the designs.

I wonder how much of the mass of building in Qatar has added to global warming; just like the amount of electricity used for AC and what that adds to climate change. This is just another corrupt money elite pretending to adhere to human rights. When in fact Qatar’s endless thirst for money overrides the human right to live on our Earth Mother that sustains life.
Yup hundreds of migrants killed and underpaid yup it will leave deadly legacy
Say what you want but football is best played in conditions where climate is between 10-20c. Anything around or above 30c with humidity and you are going to see players getting exhausted frequently affecting the overall pace of the match.
Its happening in winter..so everything will be fine
It’s in the winter and the stadiums are also air conditioned…
ez 😛
But it will happen in this temp range, this is the temperature in December till Feb almost of the day. I’m sure you’ll have more reasons you won’t like it here, but you’re not forced to come, you’re just welcome to. That’s all. 🙂
🤲💕💕well wishes of success & safety to qatar 🇶🇦& its people.
@Ohsnapson Bro proof?
@Ice Bird look up the modern slavery index. Enjoy.
Sad you need me to tell you this btw…..you could research for yourself and draw your own conclusions if you do not believe me…
Is there poor people live in katar ?
there are poor people everywhere
About Qatar k don’t thy
Yes everyone who lives there is poor morally and intellectually speaking
No
This will a white elephant of the future
I had almost forgotten that al Jazeera was qatar state tv, until this showed up 🙂
@Ohsnapson Bro Islam is responsible for the most slavery in the history of mankind.
@Ohsnapson Bro al Jazeera is fake
@Ohsnapson Bro
So did france when it hosted the world cup in the 1930s, your point is?
@bill Omalley Lmao 1930…….that’s your argument?
So you are saying they are behind by almost 100 years?
Qatar is the best
@Dylan peres they have the highest standards of living in the world, and top unis.
@Dylan peres slave labor is what happened in the Americas and Europe
@Samer Nattifi don’t know if you’re being serious or if this is just a bot account
Edit: joined 2 months ago, yea probably a bot account.
@salim Egypt they have their own religion and own rights which they want to keep who are you to interfere
@Samer Nattifi 😂 man shut up
Going to be the most boring world cup ever to happen.
HQS you cannot party on streets. You can enjoy beer. You cannot kiss. It would just be like a holy tour. 😴
@A#*”#@ jay it’ll be nice to not have annoying young delinquents in the streets and have the streets trashed, celebrate in your hotel or something feel free kissing there
Yea a legacy of worker deaths.
Good luck Qatar! I’m really looking forward to the Qatar World Cup in 2022! GO QATAR!
Qatar should stop genocide of workers in their own country
Qatar second base of Taliban terrorist
If you have money💸💸💸 then this westerner are at your feets😋😋🤡👅
all for the small price of 6000 deaths
You mean 6,000,000 deaths according to the Guardian. It was literally a Holocaust in Qatarx
HQS we are just enlightening people out there about the invented Hollowcost in Qatar
that is actually the death of every foreigner in country who died during that time, the real nuber is approximately 300-600 which is sad but is a average amount for 8 stadiums
Rip foreign workers who died during construction work in very hot condition
Why didn’t they go work in colder countries like the Denmark or britain?
@Samer Nattifi because scumbags like you promised them that they would be safe and well paid. Britain and Denmark have safety standards and pay scales that ensure all workers are looked after. Qatar will NEVER be considered a 1st world nation until it understands such things.
Goddam this is the middle east at least cover up and show some respect to the culture or at least step out of the guys personal bubble.
I wish Qatar will host basketball world cup also
Basketball world cup is flop
@mohamed bin rahid khan khaled bin salman why flop? cricket you want?
@mohamed bin rahid khan khaled bin salman basketball is one of the most watched sports in the world . Just because your country ain’t good in it doesn’t mean it’s a flop
I cant wait
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
We love Qatar
@Qatari Bananahamock You just proved my point…
@Henk Mul youre not making sense 🙂
@Qatari Bananahamock Can i date a woman who is in jail?
@Eduardo Espinoza if jail visits are dates in your definition then yes, where’s that leading up to?
Ew
Where are the women?
Boycot world cup !!
@J P not worth it man, the hard work of the labourers will be in vain!
Let us see how they actually host it.
@ehiya has got a bent hairline really? Are the labourers in some sort of profit sharing contract or performance bonus deal no ones heard of entitling them to future income during and after the World Cup?! Nah, FIFA, Qatar and corporate sponsors dont deserve our money.
@J P fifa have had corporate sponsors in most of the WC. Your point is?
@ehiya has got a bent hairline you won’t, or don’t want to get the point…. others will.
Enjoy the WC
@J P na man, I get what you mean. I just feel like Qatar as a whole has been critisized a lot, which of course some are true. But at the same time they have made improvements. I actually am looking forward to the WC. Even though at the same time I feel like as if somethings wrong with them hosting. I would’ve preferred if England hosted it, or another country but I would like to see how a Arab nation hosts it.
Boycott the corporate sponsors
Give the workers a path citizenship!
Why should they?
@Samer Nattifi cause Qatar has slaves bud
@James Gordon do slaves get the citizenship automatically? Do slaves get the citizenship in Europe or America?
@James Gordon Slaves in Qatar get the citizenship if the live over 10 years in Qatar and have good command of Arabic. Illegal slaves in the west have no rights at all
Yes as a World Cup most fans don’t want
Qatar’s legacy will be that they stole the 2022 World Cup from the United States and the THOUSANDS of unnecessary in building the facilities.
Duh,,,Al Jazeera is Qatari. Of course they are gonna sugar coat this but it’s gonna be a terrible world cu
I can’t wait to see the world cup kicking off 📴📴📴
Saudi Arabia know they can build some beautiful architecture in the name of …….
All the best💯👍 Qatar🇶🇦
Thousands of people had to die for this world cup. Corruption, slavery and lies. NO TO WORLD CUP IN QUATAR!
You mean millions had to die, 6 millions of them. Qatar is the Europe of the 21st century
ساڑھے تین ھزار بلین ڈالرز ۔ ایک پینی بھی کم نہیں ھوگی ۔
🇶🇦 ❤️ 🇵🇰
Slavers
How many slaves killed to build your stadiums ?
🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
Qatar 2022, is the biggest robbery and hoax in the World Cup history. Shame on FIFA!! Qatar is not even able to offer a decent level of accommodations for the large number of tourists that will come to visit it.
The glory of the rich is built on the blood and suffering of the innocent. The Pyramids, the Great wall and world cup in Qatar. There is no different.
Lets boycott these bastards
15000 dead workers and people are still celebrating?
Shame on you
It would be a strong statement against FIFA and the corruption if countries pulled out of competing. Everyone wants the excitement of the world Cup, but who is satisfied participating in a world Cup, knowing not only that there has been far too many Needless deaths of workers who are making it possible but also that the entire bid was fraudulent? FIFA still needs reform and therefore the messaging should be strong; you cannot get away with bribing your way into hosting an international tournament anymore.
Yes, it have strong legacy as modern slave state.
This is not about football, its all about money. And people still dont think for themselves
Who are you kidding? Arabs did not build these, they are made by Brits and Australians !
🖕Qatar
Propaganda at its peak, pay the workers well and treat them like humans.
Oil money
Boycott Beijing Olympics
Boycott Qatar World Cup
and yet not enough hotels for all this people
Air conditioned stadium i will enjoy here
We don’t need Fancy , luxurious stadiums all we need is passion and a good field.
Built by slaves. It is disgusting.
When billions of dollars are involved, human rights are thrown out of window mate.
love how they are proud that they didnt controversially relocate citizen homes….
while they literally killed thousands of slaves.
Shame on Al Jazeera for not covering that,
Good job
The terrorist Qatar dictatorship should never have gotten the World Cup. Al Jazeera sucks
We do not want World Cup 2022 be in Quater ,Reffer it to another Country like Mexico or USA
They scratched World Cup 2022 Repute
Me do not want this Wedding in Qater ,,Hopefully, of World to reffer it Another Country
دولة قطر الارهاب والخنزيرات والخنازير
Sorry for Qater Country
I can’t wait to see World Cup in Qatar!!!
-from Thailand
you better, thousands have worked to death for it.
@Drilla he better just warn the people about Qatar’s evil secret
It still might not happen!!!!
hope it does otherwise u guys killed 10000 workers for no reason
@Ice Bird yes 10.000 seems to be a lie.
The death toll of 6,500 estimated by the Guardian consists of 5,927 Indian, Nepalese, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankian workers between 2011 and 2020. They received the numbers from the countries’ governments. The number of 6,500 also includes 824 Pakistani deaths between 2010 to 2020, according to Pakistan’s embassy.
The embassies of Nepal and India, the countries where many migrant workers (about 50 percent according to the report by the ITUC, International Trade Union Confederation, p.14) of Qatar’s World Cup stadiums come from, state that 400 Nepalese workers died since 2010, the year Qatar officially became the host of World Cup 2022.
Will players be bending their knee before games for all the dead migrant construction workers?
SORRY CANT ATTEND THE WORLD CUP LOST MY PASSPORT PLUS IM BROKE ANYWAYS
Don’t forget the subcontinental workers who worked day and night to build these stadiums. 🇮🇳🇧🇩🇧🇹🇵🇰🇲🇻🇳🇵🇦🇫🇱🇰
But Remember 100 of them are dies…., 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Thank you for this! I’m an American but it’s never recognized that alot of the Gulf’s big skyscrapers and stadiums are built by immigrant workers from these countries you listed and some others as well. They deserve respect for their hard work
@Drilla yeah why not many refuges of aghanistan in pakistan came here for better life and when they dont they go to arab countries
@JJ most smart khaliji
….and died due to temperature, work stress and Kafala
But they won’t tell you how many people died building those stadiums. Forced Slave labor as well.
I think the stadiums they have built all look great but for such a small nation most of them will largely be white elephants after the world cup. I know some will have reduced capacity after the tournament but in a sparsely populated nation like Qatar, there is no need for them. Qatar only got the World Cup because they are a rich petrostate and heavy bribes were paid to FIFA officials.
That is most likely part of truth
Reduced capacity and mult-use, such as for shopping and residential, I think that’s slightly better than what we saw in Brazil, several of their stadiums sit empty and not used for anything, like the National Stadium in Brasilia or the Manaus stadium.
@Mario Melgarejo Torres since I was in Brazil 🇧🇷 and stayed for 4 years in Brasilia, they never have good club from Brasilia, most big club like São Paulo FC, Flamengo, Botafogo are based in 2 cities Rio and São Paulo
At least they qualified
Looking great
“Since Qatar win the world cup bid”😂.
Legacy of slavery and death
I would have rather like to see World Cup in wartorn Iraq than Qatar where thousands of migrant workers have died from horrible treatment by Qatari authorities.
I’m now Qatar FIFA World Cup match work bass captain
All stadium very very nice
Unaffordable accommodation built by slave labour no thanks everyone boycott this tournament its a disgrace
That means there’s more people in the state of Arizona, than the whole country of Qatar🇶🇦… 🤦🤦🤦 This is starting to look real boring. Better go next door to Dubai instead
Keep sports away from politics. You have no right to ban anyone from playing in any competition. They did not initiate a war and have nothing to do with it. Your beef with Putin has nothing to do with sports. Sports are yours to dictate
What about the war in Ukraine?
Absolutely beautiful stadium in amazing one of the richest country
QUESTION –
‘Would be R I G H T to treat all workers as national citizens, provide them with excellent living & working conditions, and take great care of them with outstanding health and safety measures/equipment ?’
6300 migrant workers ( slaves) died due to overwork, extreme heat, lack of food, various diseases. once again proving that ‘human rights’ is a joke in the middle east
