A U.S. official tells NBC News there are early indications that the passenger plane that crashed in Kazakhstan may have been hit by a Russian anti-aircraft system. The official said if it turns out to be the case, it would be more evidence of Russia’s recklessness in its war with Ukraine.

Yesterday, Russia shot an Azerbaijan Airlines Flight (J2-8243) with a Pantsir-S1 Anti-Aircraft/Surface to Air defense system. The flight was struck over Grozny (Chechnya), Russia.
Russia did not allow the plane to land inside of Russia and redirected it to Aktau, Kazakhstan.
Analysis:

At first glance it would appear that the Russian soldiers mistook the civilian flight as a enemy attack drone. However, flight J2-8243 has regularly flown into Grozny and still has future flights scheduled. This suggests a either a HUGE mistake by the PANTSIR-S1 crew followed by an attempted cover up, or this was done on purpose followed by an attempted cover up.
BACKGROUND |
Over the last 30 days, Ukraine has been accused of striking several targets around Grozny with one way suicide attack drones. A Russian PANTSIR-S1 air defense asset was controlling the airspace at the time of the incident on Dec 25th, 2024. Today, Russia is moving the PANTSIR-S1 out of the region.
The alleged drones used by Ukraine to attack Grozny this month have a significantly smaller Radar Cross Section than the Embraer Model E190AR which was shot down yesterday. This would suggest either a highly inexperienced ADA crew or this was done on purpose.

Operated with a three man crew and commonly fires:
Munition: 57E6 Surface to Air Missiles
Warhead: 20kg
Flight Alt: 32k – 49k feet or 15km
Speed: Mach 3.8

Firing Rate: Combined rate of 5,000 Rounds Per Minute
Explanation:
According to ADA experts, the radar signature of a small one way suicide attack drone at 2k ft AGL could appear to the radar crew about the same as a civilian airplane operating at 10k ft AGL. The crew would have just a few seconds to determine if they should engage.
Good thing is that there were so many evidences that they couldn’t sweep this one under the rug like they usually do.

Many people write that there is damage on the fuselage similar to a shell hit, but if the plane crashes into a flock of birds, then the debris from the plane itself will leave the same damage, and if a shell had hit the plane, it is unlikely that the plane would have landed at all.
Have you seen the damage? If it was a bird strike the damage should be on front and leading edges not on its tail section and perpendicular to the fuselage.

So a question arises: why did the pilot obstinately try entering russian airspace despite being denied permission? Well:
