‘Life is not livable in northern Gaza’, say Palestinians

Half a million people in the Strip are reportedly facing starvation, and all 2.3 million are short of food. Hundreds of desperately hungry Palestinians from northern Gaza are now heading south to seek food. Several Palestinians told Al Jazeera that a complete lack of food in the north had recently driven them to eat animal feed – and that conditions were the worst they had ever seen. Al Jazeera’s Anas Al Sharif reports from northern Gaza. War on Gaza: Diaper prices soar as parents struggle to afford basic necessities

Gaza’s high costs and low income make diapers a luxury. 1.7 million displaced Palestinians face dire sanitation issues and Hepatitis A. With prices around $1 per diaper change, many parents are forced to find alternatives, such as pieces of cloth, due to unemployment and the high cost of living. The situation is worsened by the lack of aid and basic hygiene products, making survival the main priority for the people of Gaza. The United Nations estimates that displaced Palestinians face a ticking health time bomb, with one shower for 2,000 people and around 500 people sharing a single toilet. With Israeli attacks intensifying and more people forced to move, the […]

Gaza’s Rafah is dangerously overcrowded as Israel pushes people south

Palestinians fleeing the fighting in Khan Younis are making their way further south. Most of Gaza’s population is crammed into an area at the southernmost tip of the Gaza Strip. Trapped between the sea and the Egyptian border, they have nowhere else to go. Many are living on the streets with little or no access to food, water, medicines or appropriate shelter. Palestinians were ‘running for their lives’ as world celebrated arrival of 2024

As the world was celebrating a new year with fireworks and festivities, Palestinians in Gaza were running for their lives and looking for places to shelter. Overnight, the central area of the Gaza Strip has been pounded repeatedly. We’re looking at an area that was designated a safe zone for Palestinians to evacuate to. There are reports of five people killed. As of now, we’re looking at more than 85 percent of the population displaced. Most of them are living in tents [in Rafah]. We are seeing people queue for long hours [for food and essentials] in Rafah – the centres are very small compared with the number of who […]

US policy in Gaza war ‘totally contradicting’

The Biden administration is pursuing a “dual-track” approach when it comes to the Gaza war, analyst Luciano Zaccara says, amid its recent decision to sell more weapons to Tel Aviv. “On the one hand they are trying to convince the public opinion that the US is really concerned about civilian casualties but also they keep sustaining Israel (militarily),” the Qatar University professor told Al Jazeera. “It is totally contradicting … it is hard to understand how this is in the national interest.” Zaccara said the policy was especially perplexing in light of “mounting pressure” in the US, including among democrats, against the war as civilian casualties in Gaza continue to […]

Skunk water sprayed at worshippers near Al-Aqsa Mosque

There has been a skunk water truck which has been spraying water towards Palestinians and Muslim worshippers. This produces an awful smell, which has been drifting in the air. People have also been attacked with tear gas grenades. The reason why there are these confrontations is that, since October 7, there have been vast restrictions on Muslims entering the place they revere as the third holiest place in Islam, the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. The Israelis are only allowing people over 45 years old, but even then, they can restrict them. We have only seen about 3,00 to 4,000 worshippers in the past two weeks. Usually, you’d have between 50,000 and […]
