US President Joe Biden has spoken out against Israeli prime minister’s policies on Gaza. In an interview with an American Spanish-language broadcaster, Biden said Benjamin Netanyahu should call a ceasefire immediately. Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane has more from Washington, DC. Mohamad Elmasry from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies says the slight ray of hope over a potential Gaza truce during talks in Egypt has now faded away. “It looked like we took a step forward a few days ago, but I’m back to feeling more pessimistic as it feels much like the same. The US has used this to sort of pat itself on the back and say, ‘Look, […]
Mahjoob Zweiri, director of the Gulf Studies Center at Qatar University, says it’s become apparent to Israel’s Western allies and even within the country that Netanyahu has no interest in reaching a deal “any time soon”. “He wants more time, he wants to go to Rafah, he wants to have something he has failed to achieve so far,” Zweiri told Al Jazeera. “He and the right-wing need individuals, they need names – they talk about [Hamas leaders Yahya] Sinwar and [Mohammed] Deif, and none of this has been achieved.” Zweiri said as long as this continues, the Israeli prime minister’s stance will remain the same out of “self-interest” to preserve […]

Pictures taken on December 3 show that the authorities had completed the remaining part of the berm, 3.5km (2.2 miles) long, bringing the total length of the berm to 14km (8.7 miles) along the entire sector border. Pictures from November 22 also […]
