More than 6,000 people have now been forced from their homes in La Palma, one of the Spanish Canary Islands. Parts of the area have been engulfed in lava from a volcano which erupted on Sunday. Hurricane Ida has made landfall as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the United States. The Category-4 storm brought fierce winds, torrential downpours and knocked out power to New Orleans in Louisiana – but has since weakened. Algeria’s president has announced that 25 soldiers have been killed saving residents from the wildfires ravaging forests and villages east of the capital, adding to the fire death toll this week in the North African nation. The soldiers died during a rescue operation in the mountainous Kabylie region. The interior minister has suggested arsonists lit the fires, but so far has not provided further details. A blaze on the island of Evia is one of more than 100 burning across Greece. A wildfire that tore through a forest on the outskirts of the capital, Athens, has now receded – but has destroyed homes and businesses. Two international airports in the Chinese city of Shanghai have cancelled all flights and authorities banned outdoor activities as Typhoon In-Fa lashed eastern China with high winds and heavy rains. In-Fa landed in the Putuo district of the city of Zhoushan, a major port in the eastern province of Zhejiang, at 12:30pm (04:30 GMT) on Sunday, state broadcaster CCTV said, citing the China Meteorological Administration. At least 12 people have been killed in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, as severe flooding sweeps China’s central province of Henan. Tens of thousands are also forced to evacuate their homes after three days of heavy rainfall, which was close to the annual average rainfall. The army has warned one of the region’s stricken dams may collapse at any time, risking the lives of about seven million people.
