‘Remarkable’ drug reduces Alzheimer’s decline, study shows

An experimental Alzheimer’s drug has been shown to slow significantly the cognitive and functional decline linked to the disease in results hailed as “remarkable” by experts, despite some patients experiencing serious side effects. United States pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly announced on Wednesday that in a late-stage trial of nearly 1,200 people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, the drug, donanemab, slowed the progression of symptoms by 35 percent over a period of 18 months compared with a placebo. Flash floods hit western Rwanda, killing more than 100

The death toll in the flooding in western Rwanda has gone up to 127, according to the office of President Paul Kagame, as a rescue operation is under way to reach stranded people amid torrential rains. “Rescue interventions are ongoing in the most affected districts … in order to secure endangered citizens,” Kagame’s office said in a statement on Wednesday. Kenya cult deaths: 400 people still unaccounted for

Police in Kenya have arrested a second pastor accused of mass killings. This follows the arrest last month of a cult leader, who police say urged his followers to starve themselves to death.
