General Nguema named Gabon’s transitional leader after coup

The African Union, the United Nations and France are condemning yet another military coup in Africa – this time in the Central African country of Gabon. President Ali Bongo is under house arrest and the government has been dissolved. Military coup leaders have appointed General Brice Oligui Nguema as transitional leader. The deposed president’s family has ruled the oil-rich but impoverished country for 55 years. There was jubilation across the country but Bongo is asking people to rise up against the coup. Niger coup: Crowds rally in Niamey to demand French troop withdrawal

Hundreds of supporters of Niger’s coup leaders have rallied outside the French embassy and a military base, in the capital Niamey. They want French soldiers and the ambassador to leave the country. BRICS expansion: Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia & UAE invited

Leaders of the BRICS alliance of five nations have invited another six countries to join. They are: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Niger sanctions trigger shortages: Niamey faces basic provision scarcity

Three hundred trucks bringing supplies to landlocked Niger have arrived in the capital Niamey. The convoy was delayed at the border with Burkina Faso because of attacks by armed groups. Niger coup leader proposes three-year transition to civilian rule

Niger’s coup leader has proposed a three-year transition to civilian rule after meeting a delegation of West African leaders and warned that any attack on the country would “not be a walk in the park” for those involved. General Abdourahmane Tchiani, speaking on national television late on Saturday, gave no details on the planned transition of power, saying only that the principles for the move would be decided within 30 days at a dialogue to be hosted by the ruling military council.
