The Taliban has taken complete control of Panjshir province, the last area in Afghanistan held by resistance forces, says the group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid. Pictures on social media on Monday showed Taliban members standing in front of the gate of the Panjshir provincial governor’s compound. There was no immediate word from Ahmad Massoud, the leader of the opposition group resisting Taliban forces. The battle for control of Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley is showing no sign of easing, with Taliban and resistance fighters both claiming to have the upper hand. The region, walled off by mountains north of Kabul, is the last holdout against Taliban rule.
