Afghanistan: Departing US forces disabled planes, equipment at Kabul airport

With foreign troops now out of Afghanistan, the Taliban is busy securing the international airport in Kabul. The group is talking to Qatar and Turkey about helping to oversee the facility. But the Taliban says it is dismayed that US troops disabled the planes and helicopters they left behind. Pakistan warns of increasing ISKP threat and Pakistan Taliban

Pakistan is warning of the increasing threat of the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K) and the Pakistan Taliban. On Sunday, two Pakistani soldiers were killed in the first border incident since the Taliban re-assumed control of Afghanistan. Pakistan’s military condemned the attack and said that the Taliban should not allow the groups to use Afghanistan to launch attacks into Pakistan. Taliban fighters fired their guns into the air in celebration in Kabul as the United States completed the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan. Afghan refugees urged to cross Pakistan land borders

Taliban issues new warning against extending evacuation deadline

The Taliban says it will not extend the August 31 deadline for foreign forces to evacuate American citizens and Afghans the US has worked with from Kabul airport. But Western countries warn the mission cannot be accomplished by the date given. Speaking at a news conference in the capital Kabul on Tuesday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the US to stop taking skilled Afghans out of the country. Shia Muslims mark Ashura in Afghanistan amid Taliban rule

There have been scattered demonstrations in Afghanistan to mark independence day. In defiance of the Taliban that took over the country on Monday, the Afghan national flag was paraded in the streets. In some cities, the Taliban dispersed crowds with gunfire. But in a rare move, it did allow Shia Muslims to commemorate the day of Ashura.
