Niger coup leader proposes three-year transition to civilian rule

Niger’s coup leader has proposed a three-year transition to civilian rule after meeting a delegation of West African leaders and warned that any attack on the country would “not be a walk in the park” for those involved. General Abdourahmane Tchiani, speaking on national television late on Saturday, gave no details on the planned transition of power, saying only that the principles for the move would be decided within 30 days at a dialogue to be hosted by the ruling military council. Burkina Faso and Mali warn against foreign intervention after Niger coup

Burkina Faso and Mali have warned that any intervention in neighbouring Niger would be considered a “declaration of war” against their two countries, a signal of support for leaders of the recent coup there. In a statement released on Monday, the governments of Mali and Burkina Faso also refused to implement what they called “illegal, illegitimate and inhumane sanctions” against the Nigerien people and authorities. The message comes less than a week after soldiers guarding Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum took the leader into custody on July 26, declaring they had “put an end” to his administration. Burkina Faso demands departure of French troops: Report

Burkina coup-makers accuse France of supporting counterattack

A state of emergency has been declared in Burkina Faso, a day after the country’s second military coup in eight months. The ousted President Paul-Henri Damiba – who was ousted last night by a faction of the military – has called on the country’s self-appointed leader to avoid a ‘fratricidal war’. He also denied a claim by the coup leader that he has taken refuge in a French army camp. Protesters have gathered at the French Embassy in the capital, which was set on fire. Burkina Faso opens trial on 1987 Sankara assassination

A trial has begun in Burkina Faso for 14 people accused of involvement in the assassination of former President Thomas Sankara. Sankara came to power in 1983 and was shot dead four years later. He was a revolutionary leader who had called on African countries to default on unfair international debt. Among the suspects is former President Blaise Compaore. Compaore was deposed in 2014 following a popular uprising that brought an end to his 27-year rule. He lives in exile in neighbouring Ivory Coast and has refused to take part in the trial.
