China’s birth rate drops to record low

New figures from China show the population is in decline for the first time in more than sixty years. The national birth rate hit a record low – 6.77 births per 1,000 people. If these trends continue, a shrinking number of workers will have to support a growing number of retirees. Labour shortages and a smaller tax base could majorly impact the economy. Economists say strict Covid-19 rules are partly to blame. They expect a low birth rate and a rapidly ageing population to have far-reaching effects.
