Five protesters reported dead in anti-UN protests in eastern DRC

At least five people have been killed and fifty others wounded on the second day of anti-United Nations protests in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo city of Goma, according to the government. Demonstrators say peacekeepers have not protected them from violence in the region and want them to leave. Thousands flee from DR Congo clashes to bordering Uganda

The Red Cross says more than 6,000 people have fled into western Uganda. Fighting between the M23 rebel group and the army in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has sent thousand on the run. Nine years ago, M23 took control of swaths of territory along the DRC border with Rwanda, but was defeated in 2014 with the help of a peacekeeping mission. Rebel attacks kill more than 20 DRC soldiers

In Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), thousands of people have been forced from their homes because of fighting between the army and the rebel group known as M23. On Tuesday, an army position was attacked in Rutshuru, north of the city of Goma. M23 is widely believed to be backed by Rwanda and is one of more than 120 armed groups operating in eastern DRC.
