Thousands protest amid global anger against COVID restrictions

Tens of thousands of people in several European countries, including Greece, France and Italy, have protested against anti-COVID measures. In Athens, Greek police tried to break up protests against compulsory COVID-19 vaccinations; some protesters threw petrol bombs and the police responded with tear gas. The mood was the same in Paris where tear gas filled the air as protesters opposed to a government virus pass faced off against riot police. The EU says 200 million Europeans have now been fully vaccinated – more than half of all adults – but that falls short of the 70-percent target set for the summer. Protesters across Europe clash with police over COVID curbs

Countries across Europe are returning to lockdown, as the continent grapples with a surge in coronavirus infections. In Germany, police used water cannon and pepper spray to disperse anti-lockdown protesters in the city of Kassel. In neighbouring Switzerland, more than 5,000 protesters gathered in the town of Liestal to demand an end to COVID restrictions which have shut restaurants and other public places for months. Elsewhere in Europe, there were more anti-lockdown protests on Saturday from Bulgaria to Romania, Serbia to Croatia.
