On the evening of February 3, a freight train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in the United States town of East Palestine, Ohio. The railroad company set off a controlled explosion of the chemicals, raising questions about the effects on health and the environment. Thousands of local aquatic animals died, and residents worry about developing long-term health issues. East Palestine’s train derailment has raised questions about safety culture in the US railroad industry, with federal investigators stating that the toxic chemical spill and train derailment could have been prevented. During our investigation, Fault Lines spoke with workers at the main railroads, who described how their jobs have been affected by a […]

Fault Lines investigates the shooting death of 21-year-old Anthony Vargas. His family believes that the sheriffs’ deputies who killed him were prospective members of the Banditos — a gang inside the East LA station, which has one of the […]
Since 2010, police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, have shot 40 people, 27 of whom have died from their injuries. For a city of just 550,000 people, Albuquerque now has the highest rate of fatal shootings by police in the US, eight times that of the police in New York City and nearly double that of Chicago’s police department. In early 2014, police officers killed James Boyd, a homeless man with a history of schizophrenia. His killing, caught on an officer’s body camera, sparked national outrage over police brutality, and two officers are facing murder charges for the fatal shooting. It’s the first time in decades that an Albuquerque police department […]
