Israeli police break up protest blocking aid to Gaza: Report

Israeli police have broken up a protest by demonstrators trying to block humanitarian aid from entering Gaza. At least 18 protesters have been detained at the Karem Abu Salem Crossing (called Kerem Shalom in Israel), on Israel’s border with Gaza. They’ve been demanding the release of captives. Previous protests in the same place have resulted in trucks filled with aid supplies being turned back. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz is reporting the government of Benjamin Netanyahu is pushing ahead with a major illegal settlement in the occupied West Bank. ‘Israel preferring the war over releasing the hostages’: Analyst

Gideon Levy, a columnist for Israeli Haaretz newspaper, says the rise in Israeli soldiers’ death toll in Gaza has not made much of an impact on Israeli public opinion, the majority of which support continuing the war. “Thirteen soldiers [killed] is a hell of a price for Israel but 600 people in Gaza were killed this weekend,” Levy told Al Jazeera.
