The Houthis began in the 1990’s as a moderate theological movement of the Zaydis, a Shia minority group. Fighting corruption was one of their main aims. The 2003 US invasion of Iraq was a turning point. Analysts believe the war transformed the Houthis into a resistance group with deep anti-American sentiments. Yemen’s Houthi rebels say they hit a Norwegian tanker in the Iran-aligned group’s latest military operation amid Israel’s war on Gaza. The Norwegian-owned-and-operated ship, Strinda, was struck on Monday night as it passed through the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait separating East Africa from the Arabian Peninsula. On Tuesday, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group targeted the ship because it was “loaded with oil” bound for Israel. The Saudi coalition has launched air strikes in Sanaa and Hodeidah in retaliation against attacks on its oil facilities. Yemen’s Houthi rebels say they hit several areas inside the Kingdom on Friday. Saudi Arabia said it has intercepted and thwarted several aerial assaults by Houthi rebels in Yemen targeting the capital Riyadh and other southern cities. The attack came as Houthi rebels push forward in the northern Yemeni province of Marib. They launched an offensive against the Saudi-backed Yemeni government there in early February. Saturday was the most violent day yet. The Yemeni government has issued urgent calls for the Houthis to stop their offensive. They have warned of a humanitarian catastrophe.
