The chief of Pakistan’s influential army is calling for stable hands and a healing touch after an inconclusive general election. Both jailed politician Imran Khan and another former prime minister Nawaz Sharif are claiming victory but none of the parties have a majority. Independent candidates linked to Imran Khan’s party have defied expectations and won 102 seats so far. They cannot form a government on their own – only join a party. Pakistan has temporarily suspended mobile services across the country as polls open for the general elections. The Interior Ministry says this is to maintain law and order amid security concerns. Islamic State claimed responsibility for a bombing in the south western province of Balochistan, which killed at least 28 people on Wednesday.
