The Houthi fighters launch a missile : Attack on a commercial vessel in the Red Sea

Houthi attacks on tankers passing through the narrow strait of Bab Al Mandab that connects the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea, have disrupted one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Houthis say they are targeting vessels linked to Israel in a show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. But countries in the region are worried the escalation is disrupting business and could drag them into a wider conflict. Israel to ‘certainly pay’ for killing senior general: Iranian president

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi says Israel “will certainly pay” for the killing in Syria of a senior general with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. “Without a doubt, this action is another sign of frustration, helplessness and incapacity of the usurping Zionist regime [Israel] in the region,” Raisi said in a statement. Sayyed Razi Mousavi held the rank of major general and was in charge of a “resistance support unit” in Syria, Iran said. Sources told Al Jazeera three Israeli missiles hit the building where he was staying, killing him instantly. Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem is in Naqoura in Southern Lebanon for more about this. Explainer: Who are the Houthis?

The Houthis began in the 1990’s as a moderate theological movement of the Zaydis, a Shia minority group. Fighting corruption was one of their main aims. The 2003 US invasion of Iraq was a turning point. Analysts believe the war transformed the Houthis into a resistance group with deep anti-American sentiments. In 2015, Houthi fighters seized Yemen’s capital Sanaa. It triggered more than nine years of war between the Saudi-led coalition, which backs the internationally recognised government, and the Houthis, supported by Iran. On October the 31st, the Houthis entered the war in Gaza, firing drones and missiles at Israel. And earlier this month, the Houthis said they would target […]

Shipping companies pause Red Sea journeys after Houthi attacks

A Hong-Kong based shipping company has suspended its activity to and from Israel. That’s after vessels in the Red Sea came under attack from Houthi fighters in Yemen. The Houthis say they’ll continue their attacks if Israel doesn’t stop its war on Gaza. And their activities are starting to have far-reaching consequences, not just for Israel, but globally. Al Jazeera’s Sara Khairat reports from the Israeli port city of Haifa. Maritime expert Victoria Mitchell says while recent attacks on ships in the Red Sea have not led to a complete shutdown of the trading route, there are implications for individual ship operators. “What is important to highlight is the concern […]

Yemen’s Houthis claim missile attack on Norwegian ship Strinda

Yemen’s Houthi rebels say they hit a Norwegian tanker in the Iran-aligned group’s latest military operation amid Israel’s war on Gaza. The Norwegian-owned-and-operated ship, Strinda, was struck on Monday night as it passed through the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait separating East Africa from the Arabian Peninsula. On Tuesday, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group targeted the ship because it was “loaded with oil” bound for Israel. The crew refused to respond to all warnings, he said in a televised statement, adding the Houthis would continue blocking ships heading to Israeli ports until Israel allows the entry of food and medical aid into the Gaza Strip. Iran warns Israel of imminent ‘preemptive action’ if attacks worsens in Gaza

Last night’s statement by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian is seen as the strongest yet, warning of the possibility of a preemptive strike in the coming hours. He said groups backed by Iran will not allow Israel to do what it wants in Gaza. Among those groups is Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which has been engaged with Israel along the border for more than a week now. That cross-border exchange of fire has so far been largely limited in scope, confined to the border areas and military targets. Hezbollah describes what is taking place along the border as skirmishes and a warning, while Israel describes it as below the level of escalation. […]
