Ardi Imseis, a professor of international law at Queen’s University, says the International Court of Justice’s ruling determined Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory to be “illegal” and can be subject to reparations. Imseis says the ICJ’s findings are “binding” but not only for Israel. The US is taking increasingly assertive steps in trying to limit settler violence. First, the demand was made for Israel to control “extremist” violence. Following that, a visa ban was imposed last week on some individuals linked to this violence. Now, the shipment of 27,000 military-style rifles, initially destined for the Israeli national police, has been temporarily halted by the Biden administration. There are concerns that these weapons could end up in the hands of settlers. Notably, the pause comes after the shipment had already cleared the initial congressional review and passed the committee stage. Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-Castro has the latest from Washington, DC. The US State Department announced on Tuesday it is issuing travel bans on dozens of Israelis and some Palestinians for taking part in violence in the Occupied West Bank. Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank deny daily harassment, dismissing US concerns. Contrary to their claims, documented attacks have doubled since October 7, prompting travel bans for some settlers. While downplayed by settlers, the Biden administration’s move is seen as symbolic. NGOs supporting settlements may face scrutiny. Despite on-the-ground denials, escalating violence raises questions about further US intervention. Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane reports. The US Department of State has said that it will impose visa restrictions on Israeli settlers involved in undermining peace, security or stability in the occupied West Bank. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the move on Tuesday, one day after the State Department said that Israel has not taken sufficient steps to address settler attacks that have driven many Palestinians off their land. President Joe Biden and other senior US officials have warned repeatedly that Israel must act to stop violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, which has increased since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Palestinians have described settler violence as one part […]
