Taliban issues new warning against extending evacuation deadline

The Taliban says it will not extend the August 31 deadline for foreign forces to evacuate American citizens and Afghans the US has worked with from Kabul airport. But Western countries warn the mission cannot be accomplished by the date given. Speaking at a news conference in the capital Kabul on Tuesday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the US to stop taking skilled Afghans out of the country. The UN’s human rights chief Michelle Bachelet says she believes the Taliban is committing serious violations, including summary executions of civilians and restrictions on women. It took the Taliban ten days to take over Afghanistan, and emotions are ranging from astonishment at how quickly it happened to fear of what lies ahead. There have been chaotic scenes at Kabul airport, with large crowds of people desperate to get out of the country. But all flights have been cancelled, at least for the next few days.
