Israeli forces have killed at least 27 people across Gaza since dawn on Sunday, including in an attack on a school sheltering displaced people west of Gaza City, resulting in the deaths of at least four Palestinians. Yesterday, 16 people died in a strike on a UN-run school in Nuseirat Refugee Camp. The escalating violence has overwhelmed al-Aqsa Hospital, worsening the dire medical conditions exacerbated by ongoing fuel and supply shortages. UNICEF spokesperson, James Elder says that while attempting to deliver essential aid to 10,000 children from Deir el-Balah to Gaza City, the truck was stopped and denied passage. During the hours spent at an Israeli military checkpoint, he “bore witness” to the shooting deaths of two Palestinian fishermen, who were trying to leave the area. Since Israel’s announcement of its intention to expand the ground invasion to Rafah city, we’ve been seeing a surge in bombardment, a significant intensity in scale and level of destruction. In central Gaza, a large number of people were reportedly killed after the bombing of a residential area. Civil defence members couldn’t reach the site because of heavy shelling and small-arms fire targeting them. Many people are believed buried under the rubble. Around Nasser Hospital in southern Khan Younis city, we’re witnessing a new trend of targeted killings. Israeli snipers are surrounding the area near the health facility and shooting people. So far 17 bodies have been recovered from the […]
The Israeli military says its ground forces have “encircled” the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip after 24 of its soldiers were killed in the enclave in its largest single-day toll in the three-month war. “Over the past day, troops carried out an extensive operation during which they encircled Khan Younis and deepened the operation in the area,” the military said in a statement on Tuesday, calling the city a stronghold of the Palestinian armed group Hamas. The Palestinian Red Crescent says Israeli forces have shelled its headquarters. Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud reports from Rafah in southern Gaza. In the Gaza Strip, heavy Israeli bombardment struck extensively, encompassing land, air, and sea assaults. The southern region bore the brunt, particularly Khan Younis and Rafah city. Overnight, Rafah’s central area and Shaboura refugee camp faced bombings, resulting in 23 fatalities, including four children, and over 10 critically injured. The most devastating impact occurred in Khan Younis, specifically the western side, which was previously designated a ‘safe zone’ for displaced people by Israel, and has faced repeated targeting. Intense strikes near Khan Younis’s Nasser Hospital reveal a concerning pattern, with tanks and armoured vehicles deployed on the main road leading to the medical facility. A warning to viewers that some of the footage in this report may be disturbing. As people in the northern part of Gaza pondered over leaving to the south late last night, a major air raid on the Maghazi refugee camp destroyed entire neighbourhoods. More than 30 people were killed, mostly children and women, and about 100 injured. The exact number of casualties is unclear since many people are still under the rubble. With water tanks also being attacked, the new strategy of the Israeli army seems to be one where every element which sustains life in Gaza is being attacked. Al Jazeera’s Assed Baig reports.
