A US aircraft carrier, the Nimitz, has arrived in the South Korean port of Busan as part of extensive military drills. It is the first time the nuclear-powered warship and its strike group have visited the peninsula in 10 years. It comes as North Korea has called for increased production of weapons-grade nuclear material and is launching a series of missiles in protest against the resumption of joint exercises. The United States has held air exercises with South Korea and Japan involving strategic bombers, a day after North Korea fired a Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The US has opened a Space Force sub-command at its base in South Korea. It is expected to optimize the use of its satellites and other space-based assets as North Korea has been on a record-smashing run of missile testing this year. The unit belongs to the US Space Force, which was launched in December 2019 under then-President Donald Trump as the first new US military service in more than 70 years.
