Thousands of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been on the move, fleeing for safety after seeing soldiers retreating. The conflict between the military and the M23 fighters is moving closer to Goma, the regional capital of North Kivu province. 0 Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), an Italian policeman and their Congolese driver have been killed in an ambush on a World Food Programme convoy in the eastern DRC. Luca Attanasio was on a mission in North Kivu province, an area teeming with armed groups. No police or security forces accompanied them. Human Rights Watch has released video it says shows fighters from a Congolese armed group beating civilians and getting support from the military. Shimiray Guidon is the leader of the group, the NDC-R which is accused of human rights abuses. Prosecutors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have issued a warrant for Guidon’s arrest but he remains at large.
