A US aircraft carrier, the Nimitz, has arrived in the South Korean port of Busan as part of extensive military drills. It is the first time the nuclear-powered warship and its strike group have visited the peninsula in 10 years. It comes as North Korea has called for increased production of weapons-grade nuclear material and is launching a series of missiles in protest against the resumption of joint exercises. The United States has held air exercises with South Korea and Japan involving strategic bombers, a day after North Korea fired a Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The US has opened a Space Force sub-command at its base in South Korea. It is expected to optimize the use of its satellites and other space-based assets as North Korea has been on a record-smashing run of missile testing this year. The unit belongs to the US Space Force, which was launched in December 2019 under then-President Donald Trump as the first new US military service in more than 70 years. North Korea has fired two suspected ballistic missiles, Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide said on Thursday. The missiles were launched from South Hamgyong Province into the sea off Japan’s eastern coast. The US Pacific Command says this shows Pyongyang is a threat to its neighbours.
