The Houthis began in the 1990’s as a moderate theological movement of the Zaydis, a Shia minority group. Fighting corruption was one of their main aims. The 2003 US invasion of Iraq was a turning point. Analysts believe the war transformed the Houthis into a resistance group with deep anti-American sentiments. In 2015, Houthi fighters seized Yemen’s capital Sanaa. Thousands of Houthi supporters rallied in Yemen’s capital on Sunday to mark the eighth anniversary of the Saudi-led military intervention in the war. Houthi rebels ousted the government from Sanaa in late 2014, following years of instability. As a result of the conflict, the UN says hundreds of thousands of people have been killed, millions internally displaced, and two-thirds of the population are below the poverty line. The Saudi coalition has launched air strikes in Sanaa and Hodeidah in retaliation against attacks on its oil facilities. Yemen’s Houthi rebels say they hit several areas inside the Kingdom on Friday.
