The protests have never been about housing. It’s about the Chinese intervention over Hong Kong politics and the extradition bill. The Hong Kong chief had an illusion to address the housing issue would dissolve the democratic movement.

@steven gaynor are you sure that they are arrested legally in mainland. I believe most of the hongkongers will not believe in this allegation. According to Wikipedia 「Between October and December 2015, five staff of Causeway Bay Books went missing. At least two of them disappeared in mainland China, one in Thailand. One member was last seen in Hong Kong, and eventually revealed to be in Shenzhen, across the Chinese border, without the travel documents necessary to have crossed the border through legal channels」

Simon Shen is not a good commentator and I see very afraid to offend the Chinese government.
Cannot blame him. Somebody is looking over his shoulders If he is critical of the Chinese Govt. He is a salaried staff and should not put sand into his rice boil, so to speak.
This has been not a vote of dissent because of democracy or 5 demands or whatever the protesters have been representing etc2 which have never been in the interest of Hong Kong people anyway and in fact threatened Hong Kong with destruction and violence but of frustration at the slow and unresolved reform of poverty levels of Hong Kong among others.
Half of the population do not trust the police. The people making the demands ARE the people. And staying with the prc isnt helpful to hong kong either. Its freedom or die.
Also i should mention the poverty level in China is very high as well, if put at 1.40 rather than the stupid .9 it would be about 900 million or half of it in poverty.

Who is the Hong Kong executive? The Hong Kong citizen need a person who has democracy, human rights and understands freedom. Not a copier or a follower from another country. We hope Carrie Lam clearly understands that. After the elections right now, we need an independent investigation community, not an independent reviewing committee nor research community. Many HK people are obviously Anti-Beijing who refused to accept the ONE COUNTRY TWO SYSTEM CONCEPT. They want Hong Kong to be a so-called “Independent Country” but rather under the protection of Britain, Canada, Australia & the USA which is to say “UNDER THE COMMONWEALTH OF WESTERN WORLD.” This is essential going back to the same old order of being under the Western Power. These are the type of Chinese people who are brain washed and do not have any self-pride, nationalism as well as having identity confusion.
Do you (the white people of the Western World) honestly see them as your equal and will give an Asian (Chinese) an equal opportunity to become the President of USA or Prime Minister of England, Canada or Australia if they become citizens? You people of HK should be more realistic. “Blood is always thicker !” Have you ever thought about your own Nationalism/Patriotism as a full blood Chinese, a descendant of Chinese ancestry ? Whatever went wrong with your self-concept/self-identity, how did it evolve ? Take a good look at the Jewish people, since their diaspora more than 2000 years ago, each and every Jew knew very well who they are even though they are spread thin to every corner of the earth. And they kept their own language, culture & religion. They are now together in their own country and considered a superpower. Karl Marx is Jewish and considered the Father of Communism (Marxism). The Kibbutz in Israel is a microcosm of Communism. China adopted and revised the Marxism combined with Capitalism to manage this huge country of 1.4 billion people. China became an Economic miracle in the last 40 years from being the world’s poorest country during the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s to the second (2nd) most productive country in the world at the present time. The West is furiously attacking China because they don’t want China to become progressive. They want & demand that China remain poor and backward. Are you helping the West suppress your own people who have suffered so much in the last 200 -300 years ? China is so huge and its history & culture so unique that it requires an entirely different type of governance to manage the huge problems China is having. China has been attacked and abused by virtually every country in the world. Catastrophe suffered by China has been the results of evil acts of other countries who are out to take the land and wealth of China. Don’t you think enough is enough ? I hope you people will come to your senses & play a vital part in helping your fellow compatriots make China a continuing progress that they serve so much after so many years of hardship.
