The UK is in the grip of a supply chain crisis.
It has led to record inflation and the worst shortages of food and basic supplies since the 1970s.
It is complicated by factors like a fall in the number of heavy goods vehicle drivers, Brexit, the climate crisis and a global economy struggling to emerge from the pandemic.

How’s Brexit going?
Be better when they eventually all leave, but apart from that going great imo.
@Decepticon Vibez Food variety shortage is all that is being mentioned. Please don’t make up quotes. Did you watch the video?
@Stephen Conway are you serious? The title of the video says it all.
@Decepticon Vibez It’s true. There’s still plenty food around, but many items are missing. It takes longer to re-stock. And prices are going up. The 2L milk is 40p up already. That’s a lot for one food item.
@Miriam Llamas don’t you mean 67.628 fl.oz.?
Waitrose were low on avacados this morning. It’s the apocalypse!
Not at the one I work at😁
The 1970’s was not an apocalypse either, but I prefer not to repeat it.
@Stephen Conway extraordinary comment
@Artificial Algorithm Keep taking the pills
Brexit+Covid 19 what do you expect prosperity?
E.u is having a tantrum over brexit and trying to stop our trade
Yes dear, how are you doing?
There’s no food shortage. This is fake news. Anti Brexit propaganda.
@Ken Fu there is no medicine shortage. There is no shortage of anything in Britain. How do I know? Because I live here.
One hundred per cent correct. Much like bullshit 19 and these idiotic liars AKA the British government. It’s all mass hysteria over next to nothing.
@Artificial Algorithm when it comes to being deluded, you’re the expert.
@Decepticon Vibez No. Enjoy the less options at higher prices. It is what you voted for.
just eat less
they wanna be models in uk so good tip
For what does UK need lorry drivers – you have ounces now and more old british habits 😛
And they’ve got blue passports now!
In this crisis times the Asylums sekers from war zone can Bolster there economy through Manpower
In return safety from wars
exploitation 101
Lark Davis comes highly recommended, best TA guy by far I have worked with in this bull-run.
@Theodore Applebaum Had my $13k with $6500 investment in a week.
@Alisha Payne There are lots of good traders out there but most offer little ROI’s. I will advice trading with expert Lark Davis’s team as I make over $30000 on average per month from their trading strategies.
@Leon Horn How do I reach him please?
I heard his strategies are really good??
Brexit dividend,just as planned…
Congrats for whom embarked on Brexit adventure.
@Stephen Conway according to the Driver Require (biggest HGV driver agency in the UK), the number of driver shortages is around 30,000. And it’s mainly caused by the covid restrictions that hampered training of the new HGV drivers (which annually stood at 45,000 per year).
European drivers were leaving UK since 2014, not because of the Brexit, but because Poland or Czechia began to emerge as a good markets as well. Combining it with the fact that these people have their own flat/house in their native country (no need for spending significant chunk of their earnings on rent) and you have a perfect storm, which Brexit only exacerbated. I know for a fact that many many Polish are coming back from the UK as earnings are quite decent in Poland rn, while the graduates tend to stay in Poland because in the last 10 years all of the corporations opened its offices there – EY, Deloitte or Credit Suisse to name a few.
Also, get your numbers right, £13k is national living wage that Costa Coffee barista earns. Fresh HGV drivers earn minimum of £21,000 and experienced earn around £32,000. Very experienced earn up to £40,000 per annum.
@WIACZO I got my figures from Economic Research Institute. Even if you used your figures, it makes little difference. You picked Poland as a comparison.
The RHA by the way disagrees with your figures as it includes all truck drivers and not just HGV. Perhaps you misunderstood the issue, it is not just HGV.
People just blaming Brexit because they didnt get their wish of staying in EU how pathetically delusional, i would just like some statistical proof of how exactly England is in this situation because of brexit while the rest if europe is going through the same turmoil, why is that? Brexit as well?
@Michael S UBS did that analysis 2 years ago. They used models which back checked these modlels to about 15 years prior to the vote and the models were spot on. They then projected and it showed that the negative impact of Brexit is about 3-6% of GDP and that it is permanent. That means growth is stunted from where it would be. It does not mean that the UK is not going to grow, but that it will never catch up (the term never usually means about 30 years projection). Over the interim years the UBS projection and many similar ones. have proven to be very accurate.
By the way, that same set of models showed that if we did not have that massive devaluation of the currency, we would have gone into recession.
Youtube does not allow me to add links anymore it seems.
@Michael S If you’d like some simple figures to show the Brexit impact on top of Covid, we can look at the driver shortage. RHA (and Sainsburys..etc.) talks about 100,000 missing drivers. The EU also has driver shortages but it is about 400,000. Given the population differences, we would expect around about 55,000 missing drivers in the UK. That is 45,000 not accounted for. This ties in with the RHA are claiming… 30,000 drivers from the EU are not in the country any more.
On top of this, we do know that red tape for these UK drivers still working is much higher when they try to driver imports/exports. Indeed, a lot are parked up in Kent for hours which they never had to do before. M&S complained about the increased paperwork which effectively forced him to close all those stores in France.
Finally, we used to get a lot of trucks coming into the UK to complete their transportation of imports. They are not doing that anywhere as much as getting return loads is too complex.
god shave the queen
Enjoy your Brexit vote!
Best thing Britain did.
We are, there’s no food shortages, I work for a supermarket and all the shelves are full, it’s media bs.
@scotsman242424 May I ask in what capacity do you work for a supermarket? Is the variety and cost the same as it was say a year ago.
And yet they will rather talk about Harry and his wife who lives thousands of miles away than talk about what really matters to ordinary British on the street. Wake up ppl to what matters to your daily life!
We will keep harry if u take his wife back to England…. we will sit the boy down and make him watch some John Wayne movies, maybe work on his back bone a little
these royals have looted dimonds in their crown and sucked blood of poor countries
@Foziya Mir talking about looted precious gemstones from colonies most end up on the Crown jewels.
@Edna Warsidi yes you are 101%right not only gems they are the killers of 100 of millions of innocent people across the world
you loves brexit? wankers
Wankers?
Has anyone thought the driver shortage and inability to fill jobs might be because people are “disappearing” but of course that is crazy talk.. also add to that printing endless money won’t cause run away inflation and a global financial crisis that we can blame on brexit and covid.
Join the club mad cow 🐄
Your security blanket is a personal relationship with Jesus/Yeshua the Messiah…Repent of sin and believe in him with your whole heart…Read the bible…

Empty shelves at xmas – we have be hearing this since brexit and it just never happened AND it wont happen this xmas!
It takes time to show the brexit after effects, it’s beginning to show now.
UK isolated themselves, WHEN CITY GOVERNOR DECIDES COUNTRY FUTURE THEN THESE PROBLEMS EMERGE
Cameroon Brexit poll decision is only reason of today problem
The only reason? How about the decades of anti-EU propaganda? You know the propaganda Boris himself admitted to have pushed for years as a “reporter”..
are you trust these western countries politicians impostor?
I think this pandemic has taught alot of people the important of multiple streams of income, unfortunately having a job doesn’t mean security…No rich man or woman made it through salary, investing will be wise.
@Jenny Lingard thanks…
@John David I just sent him a message

Poor Britain
What is bukingham palace doing
Hoarding food, I guess.
Who cares?
Queen probs passed away or moved country.
Thats what you get for voting for Boris the buffoon.
Well he’s a clown but not over Brexit. Brexit was a wise move in my opinion. He’s actually a liar and a hypocrite. He only tells the truth by accident re covid and all that bullshit and lies.
not just our country … all those locked down for any significant time are. US shelves , Australia shelves not looking too good.(No Van Drivers) add the month long port closure , microchip shortage , evergreen ship obstruction if you have any gift giving festivities incoming better buy as soon as you see it the holiday season is going to suck.
Do not complain England left the EU. You voted for it.
Only just over 50%of the votes were for Brexit. Moreover, EU citizens resident in the UK could not vote and commonwealth citizens resident on the UK could. I’m among the people who left the UK.
I’d rather starve than be part of the EU
@Richard Price be careful what you wish for
Your dreams may come true.
@chris l Brexiteers are sleeping walking Britain off a cliff.
Well done brexit voters
Now they are starting to regret
No food shortages in my area
I bet nigel farage knew about this one as well!😏
get on with it UK and learn to stop complaining. You wanted brexit and it has happened now go on and find the people u need to do those jobs.
Peak oil / net energy collapse
Everyone needs to go and buy dozens of loo rolls !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did not notice it
Food shortages in London
Food shortages in Kabul
Whatstandwell happening?
That’s what the UK deserve for voting the
Tally ho band
Into power.
I smell panic buying again.
People need to be more self sufficient, start having your own allotments.
Right !
Say thank you to Mr Borisss 😀
This is problem of original BRITS which they doesn’t want to get job because on ‘benefits’ they do well 😉
Foreigners take cheap jobs like lorry drivers, at food factories, and so on. They will work for lowest money where BRITS doesn’t move any finger for that.
Sorry but brexit is not a problem. Problem was and is in ‘socialismus’ established in UK 😉
Miss Teacher roll’s in grave …
How is that BREXIT working out for you? Did it solve all your problems?
GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAINS ARE COLLAPSING — BANKING AGE ENDING – BREXIT NOT INVOLVED
Did you listen/watch the video? Brexit is making a global supply issue much worse. The EU has shortages, but the UK is much worse off.
@Stephen Conway BREXIT HAS NO BEARING ON THE ISSUE
@LEE James You can write anything you like in uppercase but it makes no difference. Using the EU as a benchmark as we should only be short about 60,000 drivers and yet we are short 100,000. Plus Brexit has much more red tape for export/import and fewer EU drivers willing to make the trip to the UK because of that Brexit induced red tape….and the figures don’t lie. It is indeed made a heck of a lot worse by Brexit.
Crude figures just on the drivers, but if 40,000 drivers are missing out of the 100,000 that’s 40% down to Brexit, and that does not include the red tape.
You can use uppercase to respond.
The hole world is in chaos!
politian’s should not have been giving welfare benefits!!!!!!!!!
It’s worldwide. Stop blaming brexit.
Can’t understand that the top comment on an Al Jazeera video is a scam post…
A perfect storm of many things? Really?
I think every country in Europe have the same problems, except Brexit.
The EU is suffering from things like truck driver shortages too. 400,000 short to be more precise. Yet, given the size of their population it is not as bad as the 100,000 missing in the UK (450m in the EU and 65m in the UK). It should be around 60,000 missing in the UK. Strangely that is not far off the number missing in the UK if the EU drivers had not left (according to RHA up to 30,000 EU drivers).
So put your figures into context and you can see that the UK is worse off.
@Stephen Conway That is my point. Most variables are about the same, the only real difference is Brexit.
@Ben Ghazi We are in agreement, Brexit is making it a lot worse.
🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐,🤔,✌🏾
It’s by design.
On top of that gas prices went up by 400%.
UK should lift anti-Russian sanctions and pray for Russians to give them cheap gas, coal and oil
It’s all planned by corporations and the WEF.
The wonders of Brexit. ✨✨✨💕
Don’t forget 40 odd years of addiction to low wage, predominately service based neoliberal economics and governance with its its low wage global production and related supply chains.
The same is happening in America. This has nothing to do with brexit.
You Will Own Nothing, And You Will Be Happy.
Wait until there’s a war with China. Supply chains will be non existent then! Fun times.
If you knew what was happening in China at the moment, you would know that declaring war is the last thing they want or need right now.
But hey…the taste of sovereignty!
LOL
oops.
climate change has affect crop yields, that’ll be good news for the farmers as they won’t be short of workers to pick the stuff that didn’t grow, they will just be short for the stuff that they did grow
Fake news…… There is no ‘food shortage’.
I think South Africa should do a funny advert about Nando’s crisis in the UK.
I think Africa should do a Live Aid gig for the UK 🎶🎵🇬🇧 🎵🎶
Glad to see supply chain crisis in UK. UK getting what it sew in other countries
Well I hope your country suffers a lack of food aswell
Climate crisis????? We have hade the same climate for 20 years !
Now imperils need to work no more free time for white Brits.
Yes, the Golden Age is just around the corner (???)
But UK Australia and USA preparing for another war in South China sea lol
Britain is such a weak country these days. We are like a scared desperate clingy child, depending on the rest of the world in order to function. Well bye I’m off to live in Europe 🤣
The sun has set on the Union Jack since many decades ago 🇬🇧. The next flag to see the sunset will be the Stars and Stripes 🇺🇸 with the Fall of Afghanistan an indicator of the beginning of the end of an empire.
RIP British Empire and Advanced RIP American Empire!
@Peter Smith The UK and USA are just corporations and ran into the ground by design. The suffering resulting will just be entertainment for the rest of the world. Then Europe will go the same way and power will just go from West to East. Some of Europe will emigrate to Russia, even Africa but most of the UK and USA populations will be denied as they are for the cull in the short term.
The problem is we have underinvested in the last 20-years to train people in various jobs
poor are losers.
The UK deserve it. They voted for this. Not all but most.
The majority did, but not most…
And it was on the back of a 30+ year propaganda campaign…
Plus anyone born after 1998 didn’t even get to vote, so my generation were dragged out against our will with no way back in, despite us being overwhelmingly pro-EU.
So I think it’s a bit harsh to say we deserve it, especially when it means that if things get worse, there will be price rises and the poorest people going hungry, which I wouldn’t wish on anyone…
@The Dastardly Penguin i voted remain. But i have accepted the vote leavers won and we lost unfortunately. I bet the vote leavers regret it now but little late for crying
I remember 2 years when I visited that country. In their capital I saw decay everywhere. They were boarded up empty shops, homeless people in alleyways, women drunk openly urinating in the streets at night. It was so grey and depressing. Couldn’t wait no leave. UK is a dump.
It’s become a increasingly dysfunctional divided society over the decades aided and abetted by evil elites and their toxic neoliberal agenda of mass immigration and the obsession with making the wealthy elites even more wealthy at any cost
Ethiopia isn’t exactly faring well at the moment either sir
cabover trucks are so cool
Brexiteers slowly beginning to wake up from delusions of grandeur.
Cos Switzerland has the same problems
The drivers make more money with local courier companies and it’s less stressful
*CO2 is as vital to life as Oxygen.* Food cannot be packed without it. Photosynthesis cannot transform energy ⚡ into storable form (food) for life processes, without it. *But billions are being spent pumping it Underground*
In UK it’s the Drax power station – nead timber for your house? Too bad, Drax power station burnt it and put it under the North Sea forever – Why? Because they get £900 million per year from the carbon trading scandal rip-off that is behind the massive increase in prices.
Iceland’s doing the same! Because they depend on fish (whose food chain begins with Algae, which depends on CO2 for Photosynthesis) it won’t affect them will it?
What if they want to pack their fish (before fish stave to death) for export they depend on?
There’s no driver shortage, there’s a shortage of decent large companies who pay a good wage and treat workers with respect. .
And to think the stock market is heading to all time highs. In the movie, The Big Short, everything went up for no reason before it tumbled down. Don’t ignore the signs. The market is either faster or slower than what we think will inevitably occur. In the case of a crash, it’s slower and nothing makes sense.
And the stock market doesn’t give a good prediction for the people. Netflix has very few employees and males billions of dollars
@El Loco Netflix is co owned by a great nephew of PR/propaganda expert Edward Bernays, who was a nephew of psychologist Sigmund Freud. Anyone watching Netflix content is being programmed by people who know precisely how to do it.
And fast-forward 24 hours… haha
No sympathy they wanted brexit
The joys of a country that been addicted to 40 odd years of low wage, predominately service based neoliberal economics and governance with its its low wage global production and related supply chains.
I’m American. Apparently economists are just as worthless as any other expert . In good times they project the fun will never end. In bad times they become doomsayers. Call me crazy but I’ll focus more on family and friends rather than smoked artichoke hearts and sushi until supplies come back. Which they will.
Yes, you do that.
The government really should organise the public to give HGV Drivers _a round of applause every evening._
No food but plenty of vaccines yo 😂
Coming to a city near you inflation and food shortages already here in nyc, when the pandemic hit that was a good time to prepare and learn to prep. I truly feel sad and upset for what is happening in the UK
Yes dear, but i believe everything gonna be fine
We Are Living Biblical Times.
Truckers are the back bone of our society. No truckers = no food, no gas, no supplies in general. 🤔
Hey truckers. Thank you for your hard work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I was a lorry driver – got to be lucky to get good pay nevermind all this new big pay promise bollox
Voting matters. Vote stupid and get stupid results.
*All created DELIBERATELY to force you to consume less.*
Yes, Brexit is a woke conspiracy. They got the racist to vote for their doom.
2022 is progressing to more painfull years to come
What a load of tosh
Yes inflation is at its highest don’t tell you here though that the EU inflation is much higher than our 3.2%
Most likely why it didn’t give any figures on this
Well make the immigrants work
They left, given the UK told them to eff off. They went to work in the EU.
@Sam Hartford that is terrible then the uk government needs to resolve this problem today
Don’t blame covid, for food shortage. This is part of the agenda, high gas prices, plandemic, and soon they’ll target cows, pigs, turkeys, chicken, and fish.
Abdolute rubbish and fear mongering.
Well, you have chosen for Brexit. Now face the consequences and pay the lesson fee
Time for Trump again.
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures
Don’t you want to save the environment? No fuel, my friends. Enjoy.
