With Arctic drilling Russia will be the dominate energy producer in the next decade, while USA will have lost the petro dollar.

Apparently their is a shortage of gas and oil. One possible way to fix this for the mid term is to drill for more of these commodities.
That’s the normal, sane way of thinking. Supplies start running low, so you secure new sources to replenish them if possible.
However, some EU countries think otherwise…which is dumb but exceptable-but only in regards to their own sovern nation and not other lands who would rather seek a solution to a problem and not risk dire shortages and the economic troubles such shortages might entail.
It’s because of the fragility and uniqueness of the Arctic environment. All Arctic species are close to or are endangered. One oil leak (where there’s gas there can be oil) would permanently sterilize large areas that have no ecological means of mitigating it. Where I live the Arctic is still basically pristine. We didn’t force our populations to inhabit these unforgiving areas, the Soviet Union used to love banishing people to those zones, otherwise, they would not be inhabited to the extent that they are now. Their permafrost areas are melting at an exponential rate because of human habitation that was never meant to be there.

Why not banning fracking, like in North Dakota, where oil is extracted by this method, but associated gas is burn in pure waste in giant torcher, because there is no infrastructure to transport gas to market, and local natural gas price is already so low that it doesn’t worth the trouble to build the infrastructure.
