That’s all they do these days. The insurance companies are the ones deciding what care you can and can’t get, not the doctors. Which is 100% insane, because the people making those decisions at the insurance companies, ultimately, are not doctors, nor are they YOUR doctors, so they don’t really know what you actually NEED – they only know what they are willing to pay for — and what they aren’t. They don’t care if you suffer or die, because to them, you are 100% expendable.

No you don’t. If you get a surprise bill from before this law went into effect, wait and see if it goes to collections. If it does, you don’t have to pay it, because collections just paid it for you. They want you to pay them, but you don’t owe them a thing because that’s a surprise bill, which is now illegal. It’s no longer the same bill, because it’s coming from a new company: the collectors, and they’re sending it after the law went into effect. If they try to collect, call them up, explain that it’s a surprise bill (and what you did to prevent getting a surprise bill), then say the words, “Put it into dispute.” Even before this law went into effect, if you said that exact phrase, you likely wouldn’t hear from them again. Why? Because if you know that phrase, they know you’re wise to their game and they will see you as not worth the cost of trying to get you to pay. They are in the business of collecting, not begging. They will ignore you and go after others they think they *can* scare into paying. And that was before this law went into effect! Now? LOL! They try to make you pay after you put it into dispute? Turn them in and let them get charged $10,000 for sending you a surprise bill after Jan. 1, 2022. Either way, you win. It’s wrong for medical providers to send surprise bills, especially after you tried hard to prevent those in the first place, and once it goes to collections, which is a *private, small business,* then basically, you don’t have to worry about it. They’ll leave you alone, especially after you tell them to “put it into dispute.”

@paul sawczyc 😢. Been there. I had to file bankruptcy in 2008. Lost everything. It sucks. I had to work two part-time jobs and one full-time job for a year just to be able to buy a pos car after that. I worked full-time before that but I didn’t have health insurance. I had to have emergency back surgery after a fall and my hospital bills were over $100,000. I lost my job and was practically homeless after I lost my house but I stayed at my parents and slept on the couch for a month until I could afford to rent an apartment. I just took it day by day and got thru it. I never ended up buying another house again but that’s okay I don’t have to worry about maintaining one either.

If that’s on your EOB that number is not what the insurance paid. I don’t really understand it, but the prices written down on that form are not what was paid out to the hospital it’s an inflated number. I got a bill for $450 for a dentist I went to that apparently my insurance didn’t cover- even though my insurance listed them as covered and the office verified they took my insurance- and the office manager let me go on the whole thing. He said “don’t pay that $450, I wouldn’t get $80 out of that insurance company.”

My mother’s doctor office were incompetent and they never could work things out with my mother’s insurance. My mother was 100% covered by insurance but due to the incompetence we paid a few bills after being threatened with being sent to a collections agency. I wanted to change doctors but unfortunately my mother was sick and frail so I let it go. My mother recently passed away and I am heart broken but I am glad that I never have to deal with the incompetence of her doctors office anymore.

I took my elderly mother to the hospital for a laceration on her upper arm. According to Cigna, they were in network, and there should be no problems. I reiterated our need for doctors to be in-network, and the business associate assured me we were fine. A month or two later, we got a bill for nearly $4000, for the asshat whom did the actual stitches.
They swapped-out a non-network doctor (the most expensive item in the bill), after assuring me that would not happen. That dude put 4 stitches in her arm, and wanted $1000 for each one.
I know that is nothing compared to the featured story, but it was significant for us.
I am so sorry! Tell the collections people to “put it into dispute” after explaining how stupid it is. 9 times out of 10, they’ll do it, no problem. Once it’s in dispute, especially after this, you won’t hear from them again. Collectors exist to collect, and they go after anyone they think they can scare into paying. If they realize you know the phrase “put it into dispute,” they’ll realize you’re wise to their sh^t, and will leave you alone.
Probably best to have those tape stitches you can buy from the pharmacy and do it yourself.

I had a surprise medical bill alright. I had a heart attack over a long holiday weekend, went to see the cardiologist to get checked out the following Tuesday, and his office was inside the hospital. When I walked out, I was directed to a desk where they told me I had to pay. I didn’t have insurance, so I paid what they charged for the appointment – something like $200.00. I asked if I owed anything else, and they said “No.” Fast forward about 5 years, and several moves. I get a letter from a collection agency claiming that I owe them thousands of dollars for an associated unpaid bill – which had been sent to a much older address, one that was about 3 moves previous to where I was living when the heart attack happened. That bill had spent 5 years roaming all over the west coast, because address forwarding doesn’t last more than a few months or a year or something like that. Anyway, I never gave them that old address, so I don’t even know how they got it. Whatever. I explained all this to someone at the number on the collection letter and then told her to put it in dispute. She did and I never heard back from them. What was the bill for? ROOM FEE because he examined me in his office, which was in a hospital. So, for an outpatient appointment, they tried to send a surprise bill for a ROOM FEE. Disgusting. So glad I never heard back! They can’t touch me at all now!
Think of that….they pass a law to protect citizens seeking healthcare and tell them to still watch their backs. We really couldn’t have done better here?

This bill as reported does nothing. It’s eyewash BS. Insurance will still turn it down, then it will go to “negotiation”, who or whatever that may be. Bottom line is you will still get slammed with the bill. We must have Medicare for all. Medical provider thieves can NOT receive more than Medicare will pay. I have disputed a few of these over the past few years. This is just another way the medical profession squeezes more money out of patients. Be sure to read all the documents you sign before treatment. Sometimes they slip in an “agreement” that you will pay the difference for what they want to charge and the fees the insurance companies and them have already AGREED upon.
Still unbelievable that we live in the richest country in the world, yet people (citizens) need to pay cash for medical bills just because they don’t have insurance. I come from 3 generation that have never paid medical bills and have racked up plenty in throughout they’re entire lives. I grew up thinking that nobody paid they’re medical bills. It’s just something they send to you but don’t worry about it. It has never showed up on any of they’re credit scores either so it was just something we ignored for there three generations and they’re was never any repercussions to our lives. As far as our finances goes, it never affected us. Now as a adult I see so many middle class Americans killing themselves behind these medical bills and in reality if they actually knew it doesn’t affect your credit score in any way they would feel like they’re getting screwed over by the hospital. I’m not saying you shouldn’t pay them but we never did and I had no idea that you should. I never knew this was such a huge problem and discrepancy between the middle class bending backwards to pay and the poor never even having thought of paying the hospital. And all three generations of my family bought homes vehicles and so forth, it never effected us in any way. That’s why I look at the surprise medical bills like transportation helicopter rides and things like that and I’m telling myself well we never paid them anyway. So what’s the difference? LOL but it’s just crazy to me to see how these middle class families feel they have to pay the hospital and then you have poor families who know that it doesn’t matter if you pay them or not.
Pretty much the same for me. I’ve had 2 different surgeries so far in life. I’ve always had health insurance through my employer, so they got their $20,000+ out of my insurance both times, that should be good enough, I ain’t paying the $2500 they expect outta me. Statue of limitations is 5 years in my state, it’s been beyond that for both procedures, so not my problem anymore.
Had an ex gf years ago who had to have her appendix yanked out, she didn’t have insurance at the time. They kept sending the bills for like $16,000, she’d just shred em and throw em away. They did end up taking her to court over it, but she only ended up having to pay them like $50 a month based on her income. Think she only ended up paying like $2000 of it before they ran out of their allowed time for garnishment.

My educated guess is that this bill also makes it easier to deny services if you do not have money to pay and probably has some additional benefits for the medical industry to go after us for whatever we owe. At the same time we keep relying on sites like gofundme anytime someone gets sick or there is a crisis like the lunatic who ran into a crowd here in Waukesha, WI imagine if we just paid for all of this with a government program like most rich countries.
