Thing is Ukraine is a sovereign state, which should be free to choose who it wants to align with. Russia has bullied Sweden and Finland in the same way, for many years. Cyber attacks on power grids. Invasion of air space. Submarine incursions into territorial waters. Threats of invasion and even thinly veiled threats of nuclear attacks. Why? They don’t want them joining NATO. I hope Ukraine does not bow down to Russia, and keeps NATO membership as an option down the pike. I liken it to perpetually avoiding or taking abuse from a school yard bully. Versus defending yourself from the bully and showing him that you are ready to fight.
