“Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler was questioned by Atlanta police back in January after he tried to withdraw his money from a Bank of America. NBC News’ Blayne Alexander reports from Atlanta on how a report says bank employees thought the 35-year-old was staging a robbery because he handed a note to the teller asking for at least $10,000 from his account.

Bank customers can fill out a withdrawal slip. Coogler never did that. He didn’t fill out the withdrawal slip.

You get the level of competence and common sense that you pay for BOA. You hire a $15 per hour bank teller and expect her to be handle a non standard transaction.smdh. Not sure why this brother didn’t ask the manager to assist him with this cash withdrawal transaction, instead of standing in line and getting humiliated by a worker bee cashier. Errors were made on both sides of this encounter.

Your assessment of what we should think of a Black man in Ryan’s attire is exactly the kind of internalized racism that made the teller afraid. You’re telling me the teller is Black as though it makes much of a difference when you’ve been propagandized to believe the worst of people who look like you. This kind of ingrained self hate isn’t a new phenomenon; it’s found in very young Black children as well.
You mention a “robbery style note”, does it matter what the note says at all? Is it that any note passed to a teller means that a robbery is taking place? Do you know that tellers are given notes like that all the time and they weren’t robbed?
He wasn’t “asking” for thousands of dollars; he was withdrawing his own money from his own account. That’s a common practice in banks.
The computer automatically flags any withdrawals over 10K. That should not be a cause for alarm for a teller. It was meant as a reminder for them to do due diligence and all her Is are dotted and her Ts crossed.
His DL is his DL. So long as it isn’t expired, it shouldn’t be a problem. It’s validity can be verified easily.
He didn’t just have his debit card, he put in his PIN and gave her his ID. That’s 3 forms of IDs right there. If she was still on doubt, there were still other ways for her to verify his identity.
As I’ve said before it’s not weird. All any bank teller and them tell you that costumers do this on a regular basis. Plus he, himself, has said he’s been doing it for some time now with no problem.

He scared the young lady with his hand written note for $12,000.00 on the back of a withdrawal slip and wouldn’t speak with her directly. He demanded her to read the note. All the while dressed in sweet pants, mask on etc. He gave her the ‘creeps’!
If he had ever worked in a bank, I doubt he would have done any of that foolishness.
And really, how bad was it for him? He didn’t go to jail. He didn’t get tased or worse shot with a .40cal. He had to sit in the back of a police car for a few minutes. Big deal!

They had to be detained to make sure that no bank robbery or fraudulent activity was happening. That’s standard operating procedure if a bank teller calls 911 for a bank robbery.

So apparently the reason why there was a query about him withdrawing the money is because 10,000 is the limit and he wanted to withdraw 12,000.
If the teller had doubts as to his ID despite having it all in front of her, why did she not ask him to take off his glasses so as to properly identify him and explain the situation re the amount requested?
You are right there is at most banks there is a $10,000 limit but you can withdraw more it if I’m not mistaken I did it years ago it has to be reported to the IRS. That is not what she said when she called the police, she told the police that he gave his id, used his bank card and the correct pin number. This teller did not follow sop period.

i dont know if this is related or not, but recently i’ve noticed increased hatred towards men coming from women. a few weeks ago at a coffee shop, a woman told me they didn’t have what i intended to order and everything i suggested afterwards, she said wasn’t there. kinda odd for a coffee shop. and thats just one of many situations i’ve experienced lately related to women acting very unkind towards men.

Why is no one reporting the FULL details or context of this story? He gave her his ID, used his bank card, and put in the pin. On top of that she DID NO OTHER VERIFICATION. Even the 911 dispatcher was like “you didn’t do any other verifying and he has everything you need? maybe he just wants you to be discrete.” It was just pure incompetence on the part of the teller AND the bank manager that didn’t come to verify anything either. SMH.

AMAZING how these Reports miss important details like the fact gave his Drivers License, he put in his Bank Card and entered his PIN for confirmation and the Bank said his Account triggered a flag.
Right… a standard flag for any withdrawal over $10,000 but someone high strung in Bank of America wanted to escalate this unnecessarily.
I had Bank of America freeze my Account as a Home Builder and 2 days later claim it was all just a mistake.
But 5 Managers all came into the Bank Office asking me to reconsider when I came in to close My Account with Bank of America. Too much of a headache for no extra benefit.

It is not uncommon for clients to hand notes to the teller for the exact reason he provided—their safety. You never know who is listening and may notice that you have a large amount of cash on you ; times are hard for many. Also , you are NEVER to call the police while the robber is still in the building ; it could cause a hostage situation or worse . An institution like BOA definitely holds annual , if not quarterly ,Robbery training . She needs to be fired and if she was advised by her manager to call the police , they also need to be fired . Had he been an actual robber (instead of an innocent man withdrawing money from his account )she could’ve put her self and her coworkers at risk.

The headline for this video is misleading. It was the bank teller that mistook him for a robber and the police acting on that arrested. I’m not an apologist for the police, but it was the terrible decision by the bank teller that put his life at risk of being killed by the police. In many of these cases of the police shooting of black men in particular it is the person making the 911 call that is to blame. Because the police turn up and their mentality is already to use their guns so the 911 caller providing bad witness information creates a terrible situation.
He should file a formal complaint against the teller, the bank, and the officers. We know they’re just doing they’re jobs, but due diligence and due process may have been overlooked because of racial discrimination. He is a prominent person so I guess he has resources to do this and teach them a lesson well deserved.
