US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called the killing of Abu Akleh an “horrific tragedy”.
In a statement on Twitter, Pelosi said a “thorough, objective investigation is needed now”.
Addressing reporters in Washington, DC, US Department of State spokesman Ned Price called for an “immediate and thorough investigation and full accountability”.
When asked whether the US would support an international investigation, Price repeated: “Israel has the wherewithal to conduct a thorough investigation”.

From circumstantial evidence it seems like this was a premeditated murder of a reputed, compassionate, and trail-blazing lady journalist by an Israeli sharpshooter (on orders from higher authorities in Israel). She was obviously an unarmed female (shoulder-length hair, with just a large camera in hand), a member of the press (with “PRESS” clearly printed on her helmet and her bullet-proof jacket). The sharpshooter aimed for her face just below the helmet to ensure that she was killed. Moreover, the shooter(s) tried to prevent others from helping the mortally wounded journalist by shooting at them while they were clearly attempting to rescue her by crying “Ambulance!” several times. The angle of the shot originating from the Israeli soldiers’ side and eyewitness accounts (including that of an older male journalist who was shot in the back) should make it clear that Israel is 100% responsible for this heinous and dastardly act that they have tried to obfuscate with deliberate misinformation. The attack of mourners who were carrying the slain journalist’s casket by Israel is highly insensitive, brutal, and underscores Israeli culpability.
