The Slow Stochastic isn’t necessarily among the top three of most popular indicators but it does have a large and loyal following. Our trading expert David Jones takes a look at the math behind it, ways to adjust its parameters and different tricks and tips on how to get the best out of it.
It’s one of those indicators that “smooth the edges” – they need a bit more to provide a buy or sell signal. The parameters that build it are designed not to react to sharp moves in both directions (which are often followed by pullbacks) and looks at a broader picture to come into an oversold or overbought position.
As always David demonstrates it in a real market where imperfect conditions abound and put the theory to the test. You can quite clearly see some of the risks and pitfalls of using it but also the situations in which it possibly ranks among the best indicators around.
Two of the factors that you’ll see discussed in detail.
The first is support and resistance levels and how the slow stochastic can be combined with interpreting them. The second is bearish and bullish divergences in the stochastic itself, pointing at potential false signals and larger trends that might become a trap if unseen and an opportunity if identified on time.

Hey Greats video as always.. i’m here trying to learn some basics for my Cryptocurrencies trade. Can you please make some Analysis in the field of those digital currencies
Hi Yashiro, cryptocurrencies overview videos are published on the channel. Here is the latest one – https://youtu.be/9SjV9YDzU0U.
Thank you for the info
Great videos you have uploaded . Can you uploaded a video to calculate call prices .. at what price we should buy or sell . ?
Can you use this day trading or is it purely long trading ????
Great video also
swing too but not really long term
Arguably both, but the signals will probably be more reliable on daily charts.
I love you man….. I u simply awesome. your video are simple and easy to understand. unlike other crazy you tube video on stocks you have quality
Stochastic signals …i live by them !
Just stochastics?
thank you
Please concentrate more on cryptocurrency 🙂
YES!
NO!
lol
Hi, thanks, great videos. But I am getting bit confused. Values 10 Day stochastic : 10,6,6.Day percentage and values for 5 Day : %k 5,%D3,%Dn 3. Yet at 3:22 you say: it is 10Day stochastic and signal red %D value is 3=. which is correct? I am using 5,3,3
I think that was a mistake by me on the video! 10/6/6 or 5/3/3 are the usual default settings.
I love your videos. One more thing: what is the difference in parameters between 70/30 and standard 80/20 and how can this impact the decision? can we use 5,3,3 in a 70/30 or better 10,6,6 in 80/20? which is the best to use? Thanks in advance for the reply
Hi – if you use 80/20 then clearly the stochastic needs to move to more of an extreme to go overbought/sold. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, just means that the signals will differ. 5 vs 10 day stochastic is just a question of how frequently you want signals as they are different time periods.
Hello sir,
I just graduated out of college and really interested in having a career in trading and investing. Please let me know if I could work in your company as an intern. I’m a fairly active trader in the Indian market . Thank you 🙂
What about to oil 70$ is over for up or next to 75$????
This was just the information i needed! Thank you so much for the upload.
I’m really enjoying this channel.
Would you consider a video on the Ichimoku indicator? It’s definitely interesting to look at.
Thanks for all the content!
Hello;
Very good video and thanks for all the rest, you are great. Also your trading platform Trading212.
Since I’m new to trading and I’m still learning “paper trading”, I’m interested in the following;
Which financial instrument you recommendid for starting, stock, comoditis, currencies, … and what time period, day, month, ..
Thank you for your effort and response
Hi Matej, due to the regulations, trading advice cannot be provided.
I actually just started using this indicator yesterday! lol was wondering what each line was
Thank you for demonstrating slow stochastic, first time i`v seen it explained. Curious to understand when you would use the slow by comparison to the standard and on what time frames? Thank you, Tony
Good question – and I am not sure of the answer! I have always just used the slow stochastic.
Excellent video and thank you for your knowledge, I wonder if you could check the cryptocurrency of Atlant as they say they can be both the decentralized airbnb and also the NASDAQ for real estate, could you give us your comments and see if it could be a good investment? Thank you very much.
Please could you do a video about leading and lagging indicators?
very helpfull your videos sir.
really enjoying your content. There’s so many crypto noob traders who don’t have a clue but have earned a bit off crypto simply because everything went up and you couldn’t loose in 2016 but it’s becoming more and more obvious who the fools are and who the experts are.
Footsoldier just because you’ve a couple of videos in youtube doesn’t make an expert, how
No doubt who cares does it upset your life ?
Hi, could you do a video of Ichimoku indicator? Thank you!
high quality, perfectly explained and the maths behind it makes it clearer and easier to interprete and extrapolate the eventual uses, fantastic !
There are plenty of channels about trading. This is one of the few that explains the core ideas and is not sensationalist clickbait.
Every video has been excellent.
So true
Love your channel. Clearly and well explained videos! Thank you!
I just found your channel and I’m enjoying what I learn from your videos. May I just ask what is the charting software that you are using? Thanks
Hi Sherine, the trading app is Trading 212. Open an account now and trade with virtual funds in its Practice Money Mode at http://www.trading212.com/en/Free-FOREX-Practice-Account-GBP. You have a web app and native mobile apps for iOS and Android at your disposal.
Could this be applied to cryptocurency and day trading with periods like 1 min, 5 min and 15 min? Should we take into consideration then volumen of trading too?
Sure – but I wouldn’t go much lower than 1 hour otherwise the stochastic for me is too volatile. I don’t look at volume much personally, but there’s no reason why it couldn’t add something to your own trading.
From your last comment, can we use slow stocastic and rsi on the same chart to trust a bit more the results?
can i ask u which brocker and plateform u re usin’?
Hey Mohsine, this is Trading 212 – http://www.trading212.com/en/Free-FOREX-Practice-Account-GBP.
At 1:34 you say “that is a 40 point range” and then you say “if it’ s currently trading at 30, then it’ s halfway through the range” and so K is 50%. Did you mean to say “if it’ s currently trading at 20”? Because 20 is half of 40 and thus K=50%. If not, could you please explain what range you meant when you said “halfway through the range”? Because i might have got this wrong.
Thank you for your time
Hi, if you go back a bit in the video I say “if the market has traded between 10 and 50” So that’s a 40 point range. Then I say “if it is trading at 30 it’s halfway”. So let’s say it’s a share – if it traded as low as 10 and as high as 50 then 30 is the mid point. Hope this helps.
Great video. On my exchange I have 4 values as settings. K line (RSI) D line (STOCH) and %K and %D. Which one of those represent the your definition of the Dn line? Thanks
Tricky – I am guessing it is the %D line in your case but would need to see it to be sure. It should be the line that lags behind the other one.
What is the top 3 most popular indicator?
I would guess RSI, MACD and moving averages. That doesn’t mean they are any good!
Legend. As always…
on what platform are you drawning this i am using tradingview and i cant find slow stochastic oscilator
It’s Trading 212’s web app. Try it out for free at http://www.trading212.com/en/Free-FOREX-Practice-Account-GBP.
What is the time frame and below indicator??
Hi Mageswaran, while looking at the web trading app shown in the video, you may see the time frame on the chart in the toolbar at the top – the third icon from left to right. The technical indicator displayed below the chart is the Slow Stochastic Oscillator.
There is no slow stochastic oscillator in MT4. Can you explain how we add in MT4 and what the numbers should I use?
There is stochastic though. What’s the difference b/w slow stochastic and stochastic? Are they both same? TIA.
You’re absolutely an amazing teacher.
Thanks and respect from Tibet.keep it up.
You’re always great sir, thanks
Just deposited $10…gonna try and trade $5 using this strategy.
what was the result?
Lol, $10 gone….but it was mostly my fault. Wasn’t paying enough attention to the two trades I made. But the strategy is viable…thank you.
How it go?
Does anyone know what time frame he is using?
Hi Azim, as David points out at 5:14, he is using a daily chart in the video example.
I liked the last line of the video, there is no holy grail of indicators

Hi David do you have any videos on Pull Backs
1st. I’d like to thank you for your efforts. I trade in Saudi Market (TASI) and truth to be told , I found the RSI with 10 period pretty useful but not the same thing for Stochastic , just wanted to share some info.
love your course, thank you
I am new to trading and found these series which is awesome, very precise and clear.
Hello, wouldnt the divergences always come along with a trend? This being said, just following the trend would be enough instead of looking for divergences?
thank you
Thank you.
I must be missing something because that Dn line is the K on my TOS so I really am not following here
I just watch this video and it up my eyes for my trend strategy thanks meng 😎
Hello, I’m French and I use Trading212. But I speak English a little. It will be cool if the subtitles were in French.

This video made a lot more clear for me thanks
