FWIW, the POTUS does not (in all other cases prior to the Orange Menace) “do shady, illegal things”. Go look into the office and the duties of those men in that office that Oliver North occupied under Reagan. North was the “fall guy”, Reagan and/or Bush had to know and authorize North to so the arms trades that are the foundation of the Iran/Contra scandal. An overt, illegal pronouncement is exceptional and arguably as fraught with penalty as a military officer giving illegal orders to troops. In a civilian court I would expect a high bar- the prosecution will have to prove Trump intended for violence to happen- not as easy as it sounds. But the POTUS has “cut outs”, people “who get things done” but who will always protect the office- not spill the beans. Deej just didn’t have real good ones- North was true to the job he was given- was retired at full rank and benefits, even though he trafficked in US military weapons- that is what he was accused of in the press- and later became a Senator from Virginia. He trafficked weapons with a power known hostile to America; if he did that on his own hook, 16 to 20 at Leavenworth would have been his retirement- a trooper can do no greater wrong that divert military property, especially an officer. But North was never asked to commit acts he could or would see as destabilizing the country or Constitution. He did what the USMC Commandant sent him to the WH to do- whatever Reagan needed. And Reagan is the only person who could have given that order to North and have it obeyed. So the POTUS was “removed” from “provable responsibility” if the plan went sideways, which this one did. To do a coup, Trump had to get a lot of people to ditch their training, their oaths and their ethics to get them involved in this attempt to overthrow the 2020 vote. the mil is not a good place to go looking for people like that- Alex Vindman is an outstanding example, and not as uncommon as you might think. General Flynn is not very common at all- as a rule the DoD frowns on any serving members “doing politics” while in uniform. Frowns a lot when you do them for dictators- eating dinner with Vlad and not reporting it.
