This weekend, unrelenting rain is causing flash floods across the southwest. In New Mexico, surging water had stranded 150 tourists at Carlsbad National Parks. In Utah, rescue crews at Zion National Park are still searching for graduate student Jetal Agnihotri who was swept away in a current on Friday. Meanwhile, in the northeast, drought-like conditions are switching to severe storms and heavy rains. Delta Airlines is already issuing travel waivers due to the threat of severe weather.

#Weather #Flooding #NewMexico
You go hiking in the middle of flash flood season? Why.
@Bob Loblaw “A Hydrology major that doesn’t know how to swim” 🏊♀️
the storms have been forecast all week
@Bob Loblaw that’s actually pretty sad.
We were on high ground. We weren’t hiking. The flooding was on the roads to caverns not at the actual caverns. Don’t comment if you don’t know the whole story.
Study. Finds. ; Most. Republicans. Ignorant. By. Choice. Also. Want. To. Stop. Veterans. Benefits.
Sure thing genius!😂
People b!tch when it’s dry, and people b!tch when it’s wet. All I know is my cannabis plants and cucumbers are loving this New Mexican monsoon. All the wildflowers that haven’t bloomed in more than 2 decades are beautiful.
@Sicknado the state of New Mexico legalized recreational cannabis in April of 2021. Any adult over the age of 21 can carry up to an ounce and have 6 mature plants at anytime. You can go to the state office in Santa Fe or apply online to obtain a license to grow 100 plants for $1000 if you meet certain requirements such as legal senior water rights. I live on a certain parcel of land that was given to my ancestors by the Spanish monarchy through a land grant in the 16th century. The only water rights here that supercede them are the Pueblo Native Americans, justly. We’re all friends here and could care less what other people’s think.
@DiscGolf Casados I know I was kidding
in another episode of:
QTARDS CAUGHT OFF GUARD BY MOTHER NATURE
So much of the country knows only catastrophic drought and catastrophic flooding. Climate Change is here to stay as it gets worse and worse.
🦆~She Gone.
Yes. She’s probably gone.
Who leaves their daughters daily medication in the hotel room?
You would be amazed. Tip: always pack your medication first and due to large amount of luggage loss if possible keep it in your carry-on
Been to the Caves 3 4 times, beautiful, Wouldn’t wanna be stuck in there, though in this situation
@Christine Wild I take my dogs medication when I go to a job site from which I might not be back from in time. We need mandatory parenting classes before we let people have children.
@Stephanie Saavedra Unless you are the parent and you have something to add I think I heard enough to form my opinion.Child stranded underground and the medicine is in the hotel room. What part of that did I get wrong?
The universe is upset
You’ll get burned out or drowned out
TIME is up for y’all
We need the rain there is an extreme drought
drought followed by heavy rainfall leads to flash flooding. Its ironic but it causes more issue when the rainfall isn’t being soaked up by the dry, hard ground.
@Brian H Yes flooding isn’t always a bad thing
@Tyler Edwards I would imagine, most people are celebrating. I’m sure the people whose homes and stuff got destroyed no so much
@Tyler Edwards no you’re right, Noah’s Great Flood was necessary and we’re due for another one
Get used to this people. More on the way and it’s only going to much worse.
Won’t have to deal with it much longer ice free arctic is right around the corner
It is only a flash flood…
@Jc Oh, and just wait until an iceberg the size of New Jersey gets loose form the Antarctic.
“Carlsbad” wow. They REALLY did not like Carl.
How old is that joke❓
@Bacillus Cereus First time I’ve heard it
@Bacillus Cereus I live in New Mexico and never heard of that joke lol
Super hilarious
😶
Drought here
Flood there
Switch it whenever it be least convenient.
no more draughts then??
Oh, no, this is just this week. Next month the whole state will burn.
Moral of the story become a very strong swimmer
It surprises me that there are so many people who don’t know how to swim, but even the strongest swimmers can die in a flash flood.
She’s a hydrology major who can’t swim. The irony. I hope they find her
A hydrology major that does not know how to swim, must be a democrat.
The space lazors and conspiracies might have done it.
Wake up people last days biblical scripture fulfillment is unfolding right before our eyes 👀 what is going to take for people to get a clue? They call it climate change the Bible calls it signs of the times!
Maybe Russia is messing with the world’s weather lol
I’ve heard of cloud seeding or spotting. It’s been done in Dubai but makes you wonder on artificial weather being created
@ONEIL Clan Yes they seed the clouds to make it rain. They used to do it here in Alaska years ago and it would rain all summer which summer was only about 3 months. We always knew when they seeded the clouds. Summer was ruined. I know they are seeding clouds in different places in the US, Utah was one of them I believe. Many people don’t know about it and when they find out they have a complete freak out saying it is destroying Mother Nature etc. lol.
And it’s only going to get worse
It’s only a flash flood…Lol
Trump supporters: Climate change is fake news.
Hey genius, it’s Mother Nature!😂
Monsoon flooding in the desert southwest is very common
I’m very sorry for anyone in trouble or unsafe, but you really need to check the weather before hiking anywhere anytime
What happened to being a drought
still in progress i bet.
There is a drought in the Northeast, which they mentioned. Actually, the US has been in a 22yr drought. The major rivers and lakes have dropped significantly (most notably the Colorado River and Lake Mead)…
@Persephone Black the US as a whole… Because where I live, zero drought here
That end tho.. hydrology major.. can’t swim.. hope they find her.. 🙏
I couldn’t believe that when I heard it!
It’s almost like he was throwing shade at her
Time to start learning how to harvest rainwater I think.
Mini-dams, beavers, etc.
Does vetiver grass grow in North America❓
Beavers are a big part of the solution. Re-establish them and expect God to bless our land again with wetlands and the recharge of underground water sources. All done at little cost and with great benefits for everyone.
Excellent comment! Africa has been doing it rather successfully and we might follow their lead.
Mother Nature doing what she does best!👌
Fossil fuels are the kool aid.
California people should start prepping, ….
It’s pretty simple.
A warming planet causes worse extremes: …
Warmer air & water => (leading to) more humidity, heavier rain, and heavier floods.
Hotter air & topsoil => more heatwaves, more evaporation, more drought, and more wildfires.
Hotter Arctic => less ice, less albedo (reflectivity), much less ice.
That’s the way it works. It is simple physics.
The evidence is everywhere. Expect more of the same, only worse.
Completely normal for the desert.
It’s easy to underestimate the power. Water halfway up your shins can already be very difficult to stand up in, especially fast flood water.
Wait… they didn’t know how to swim?
About half of Americans aren’t competent swimmers, which really surprised me when I looked it up. I read it in a comment section and looked it up because i thought that couldn’t be true. I can’t even remember ever not knowing how to swim.
Her name tells me she was from India and There aren’t many beaches or lakes in india. Infact, majority of indians live away from ocean, near rivers which aren’t safe ( due to pollution, current , depth, etc ) to go swimming in. Many, I would say more than 50% don’t know how to swim much.
Mother Earth taking out greed Humans and Harrp program can alter the weather causing heat waves earthquakes hurricanes and droughts and flooding Facts plus humans are so greedy for money and so self-centered and take everything for granted
Blaming mother nature is a COP-OUT, blaming EXXON and British Petroleum is the Pandora’s box America and England are too Chicken Sh🤕t to open is the truth!!!
Those parks have signs all over about flash floods. You hike at your own risk. Take these stories as a warning and stay away.
Heh heh heh….
For all those who couldn’t care less about those of us homeless due to confronting a corrupt system and calling out the criminals controlling it,
I wish you the same “help” you’ve given me….and ALL the children murdered by the perverts in power.
Reap mother effers.
. REAP.
😑
Global warming if it rains global warming if it doesn’t rain complain if it rains complain if it doesn’t rain complain complain complain
@R Brown
You’re simply following your confirmation bias.
You’re not even aware of what the science says.
You just heard someone say some scientists disagree.
The data speaks for itself.
@R Brown (I typed this on an iPad there will be a lot of errors, please bear with me XD)Okay first in order to change your perspective it’s best to call it climate change. Reason being that global warming affects our climate, such as ice caps melting before they’re supposed to( there are permanent caps and temporary, I’m talking about both) can disrupt currents( high, low pressure, cold, warm temperature) this disrupts the earth’s natural current motion causing unpredictable weather in different regions. This badly affects agriculture, infrastructure, water availability. You may have noticed an excess of wildfires and drought in the west, we recognize the occurrences of these through graphs( you can look up rainfall and such in California) of course California is sort of meant to be a state with midwestern climate. The excess of(or pollution) of plastics and carbon and methane also hurt the ocean, which is a major carbon sink. Ocean wildlife may mistake plastic for food and get terminally ill and/or die from the contents. The rainforests are also major carbon sinks, that have been producing carbon do to deforestation. The articles you may have read may have not been all truthful, events are not set in place to happen because of climate change(at least in the extremely near future), however *because* of climate change that are becoming more likely to occur which is horrible, and as the years go on the probability goes up causing more disasters and famine.
With that in mind I’d like to point out solutions, we have things such as hemp plastic, the ability to invest in electric public transportation and sustainable fuels, cut down animal farming, and invest in a new way of agriculture. As a entire people we do not need to be net zero we simply want to be, at best carbon negative and at worst, carbon neutral. Before the marijuana act of 1937 we made many products out of hemp such as paper. Hemp is an amazing carbon sink, and is terribly easy to grow. If made right the products are 100% biodegradable, the products that can be made count as: clothes, plastic, paper, sidewalks, etc. Switching would help us protect the marine wildlife. The major problem with public transportation is out governments inability to give it priority. Would you rather get in car by yourself and slowly go through traffic or go on a bus that’s still slow but has other people on it. Our government(with all the money that it spends everywhere else, quite literally) could easily invest in electric trolleys and gas buses, where I live from 6-8 am is a major traffic rush that about 30,000 people are in. A bus can hold anywhere from 30 to 100 and a trolley bus can hold up to 30/35. It would only take around 300 or 1000 buses to supply everyone with transportation. Our government could also invest in bike lanes these would aid in public health and pollution. And yes we could easily make the switch, imagine if they made every car manufacturer make busses. Onto clean energy, once more we don’t need to completely get rid of fossil fuels we simply need to limit our dependency on them, you see how it affects people already(high gas prices) I’d like to see an America that’s ran about 60-70% nuclear, 30-20% renewables, and 10-20% oil. In order to achieve 60% nuclear we would need about 240 nuclear power plants, if our government set good protocols and regulations it would take about 3 years instead of seventy billion to build a singular plant. And if you wonder or are wary of the cost, keep in mind that government spends over 700 billion dollars on military, a nuclear plant costs about 2 billion. The mining needed for uranium is also not a horrible process as long as proper regulations and protocols are put in place. If you are scared of nuclear energy I’d like you to read on why Fukushima and Chernobyl we at wrong, and if you wonder about the cost France runs on some 70% nuclear energy and have some of the lowest electricity costs.
I’m deciding to give the rest their own paragraph as that paragraph was pretty long. Our farming culture is not sustainable. Meaning that it majorly hurts future profits and land. Cow manure has really worn out our soil, cows also produce an insane amount of methane and carbon dioxide due to mass production. If we got rid of animal farming and invested in better plant farming we would actually have more food to provide. We would also have put water in better use. We could invest this are to carbon sinks or even to poorer communities, all I know is that majority of it needs to go. Red meat is also harmful to people, we need a healthy balance on both, limiting cow(and any animal) farming would help our health in the same way getting a lot of that air pollution would help us out too.
Our current way of mass production damages soil, horribly. This is not sustainable as future generations will have a harder time growing things. All we have to do is invest in better farming techniques such as switching out plants so that soil can gain nutrients from plants rather than always have them taken away. I would also inquire you to research and look into this as I’m not well versed on agriculture. Overall the lack of biodiversity destroys soil and also aids in deforestation.
On all these topics I’d suggest you look into them further as I may not be completely right on everything. I hope this helped you realize how much of an issue climate change is, and how easy it would be to introduce methods to fight it. As I say if you want change, you will not ease into it.
@Moon Shoes You berating them isn’t helping us. Insults will make them defensive, attacking their beliefs will make them defensive. If you want change you are actually going to have to use words not petty insults when someone does not agree with you. Even if their opinion is far from factual, changing someone’s mind starts with showing fallacies in their ideas. Not insults.
@Rye Creek
Actually, showing fallacies isn’t an effective way to change a person’s mind.
So before you lecture, get your facts straight.
For the most part, you’re not wrong. However, you’ve overlooked that the audience here is selective.
@Rye Creek
10:1 says he doesn’t read your lengthy response and cannot follow most of what you posted.
There is even a lesser chance he can respond intellectually.
Most people are persuaded by emotion, not fact.
If their world view was evidence based, they wouldn’t be anti-science to begin with.
A hydrology major and does not know how to swim. What kind of a horrible statement is THAT? Was that supposed to be morbidly funny? The girl is missing. The scientific study of the properties of water doesn’t require submerging yourself in it.
Found the non-swimmer. You really should learn.
@Primalxbeast Zizi has a point. Them trying to make a joke out of it was inappropriate.
This is nothing, wait till grand famine, total wars, ,global diseases, and more worldly natural disasters arrive as described in the ancient text. KARMA/GOD never failed to pay the effects done to others, it will boomerang back. No more babylon, no more romans, no more nazi soon.
What the heck is happening to this planet?
It has a terrible case of terminal Mankind. Nothing an ice age won’t cure.
@xhagast Lol.. You think they’ll be another ice age. Adorable
Human negligence and greed.
Do your research. We are living in a climate catastrophe and to the point of no return. These events will only be more common and severe.
@So Ni Are you familiar with rhetorical questions?
Should have Learned to swim.
2 hours ago there was a drought 🥴
Need two months of these rains to counter that.
Hey NBC, just 5 days ago you ran a story about how the “drought emergency” in the Southwest was a “crisis” caused by climate change.
Now you’re saying there’s too much rain? Is climate change just responsible for every single weather event now?
🤣
Hope alls safe. but hopefully wildlife get a chance to drink
INTERESTING..A HYDROLOGY MAJOR AND DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO SWIM ..!! DOES THIS MAKE SENSE..??? I HOPE SHE FOUND HIGHER GROUND..!! SENDING 🙏’S FOR HER SAFE RETURN AND FOR HER FAMILY TO STAY STRONG..!!
💕☮️🙏😢
@cory hull I’ve been a hydrologist for 20 years, been stuck behind a computer screen all 20 of them.
@Alfonso Munoz if that’s for all of them then yea idk lol I aways think that should been known just for safety and to keep yourself safe
@cory hull I agree. But a flash flood has a strong current and lots of debris that can make it nearly impossible to swim.
@Alfonso Munoz yea true at that point its basically lucky if your surviving
@cory hull I feel horrible for her. Nothing in the news about finding her. I’m so sad about it.
Coolcoolcool. Mother Earth is attacking and we’re all gonna die.
THE IRONY OF AN HYDROLOGY MAJOR NOT KNOWING HOW TO SWIM. HOPEFULLY, THEY FIND HER
Extremely dry soil takes a while to start absorbing water. The pity of it all is that they would need a month of these rains to relieve the drought conditions.
If it rained every day it would not be a desert.
@northrockboy -True! But drought in a desert means abnormal dryness that is drying up rivers and the water tables. I saw a report that many cactus plants are starting to die in places because even a cactus can only take just so much lack of water.
WHY go underground in a cave during flash flood season???? Darwin awards…..
The entrance to Carlsbad Cavern is not in a stream channel and there has never been a flash flood into the cave. These people are not Republicans.
We were on high ground. The caves weren’t flooding!!!! The roads to the caverns were flooded. We were safe where we were. Don’t comment if you don’t know the whole story
H A R R P……
I hope they are able to rescue the grad student safely.
I’m from St. George, Utah which is the major city adjacent to Zion, there are sadly numerous instances where flash flooding takes the lives of people in the Zion area. At this point it’s unlikely this young woman is still alive, however I would love to be incorrect!
@Allen Richards oh my God, what drama! They’re just stuck because the two roads into there washed out. Hopefully they packed enough granola bars until the grader comes in the morning. Then they can get their McDonald’s in town.
@Allen Richards Thank you Allen. I visited the park about 25 years ago and I do remember that there were warnings in the park and in pamphlets about the possible dangers that can occur with rain and flash flooding and the need to exit the trails and move to higher ground.
@DiscGolf Casados I’m referring to the woman that was lost in flood waters in a slot canyon, your response reflects poorly on your empathy or reading comprehension…
That’s horrible. I hope they get to safety fast 🤞
I live in NM and we got dumped on this last weekend. We needed it greatly, thank God for the rain!
Me too. I was going to go camp out this week, but when I saw all the flooding going on I said..nope. Wait till this blows through.
Last fight https://youtu.be/7Gf6-IgljyE
You go during monsoon season, you most likely die. Unexceptionable
What a dumb comment. I’ve probably gone to Carlsbad Caverns two dozen times during the monsoon season. So far I haven’t died, nor did any of the thousands of visitors around me those times.
That last part was shady and uncalled for
Always check the weather before traveling! It’s not even safe to be driving in the rain 🌧or when it gets flooded. Sometimes weather is unpredictable but you can also check out other areas nearby to see if they’re also having the same forecast.
Let it rain
Oh the Irony, a Hydrology Major that doesn’t know how to Swim in a Flash Flood, That is like triple Irony Corporate Media!
More drama Jesus christ
Nice reporting. Thank you.
It’s so funny…. it’s like we need more water…. yet not ready or prepared….. this only happens all the time!
This year, climate change is affecting many more regions of the world! There are places where it hardly normally rains and end up with monster floods . Elsewhere droughts extend over a larger territory, last longer and cause forest fires difficult to control Lakes and rivers dry up to the point where there is almost nothing left. There are many casualties caused by these disasters and thousands of people have lost everything! The world changes and we must review our way of life now! We must think of the essentials and leave the superfluous and unnecessary luxuries on store shelves It may seem ridiculous to some, but overconsumption plays an important and harmful role in the environment and in our wallets! Soon in several regions of the world the human being will no longer be able to settle and it will only get worse with time! And with all it’s politicians who seek only to wage war, the future looks very bleak! Don’t have children! They don’t deserve to have a life of misery!
💯%
What happens to electric vehicles in the flood and rain? https://youtu.be/490qpnB4qCY
I hope everyone get home safely.
Hydrology major ? Didn’t know such major existed, how to get hydrated, LOL. How many hydrologists r there in the USA ?
20 years of drought and now we got floods but I’ll take the floods I’m sick of these parched years and we desperately need Lake Powell and Lake Mead to refill I hope we have record snowfall from October till May of next year
Next on the menu: Planetary Hospice, Managed Retreat, American Human Habitat Loss . We are the Extinction Level Events. 🦖 ☄️
try walking across it, you wusses.
yeah, you deserve it
This is what happens when you abuse the planet! Don’t be complaining because you only have yourselves to blame💩
On the upside, heavy monsoon rains in the desert usually mean that next spring there will be an amazing display of wildflowers in many places.
Republicans are always causing problems
Thanks fossil fuels
Government made rain clouds 🌦 💯
Absolutely!!! Also wild fires extreme heat oh yeah and hurricanes….
The news is so pathetic. “The student is a hydrology major but doesn’t know how to swim” Lmao
Thought the SW was drying up lmao
I just hope Mother Nature kills us all.
