The Mississippi River is at its lowest level in nearly a decade, slowing shipping traffic to a crawl. KAIT’s Griffin DeMarris reports.

Ya bro maybe climate change is real
I could fix this or make it harder.
This ain’t good!!
take the water from florida duh
I used to freelance deckhand out of the NMU in Joliet in the ’70s. Great job, memories, and the best cooks! 👍
Congrats! 👇 👇
🎁 🎁 💛
That’s your response to this? You seriously don’t recognize what’s causing this catastrophe? I guess we’ll get what we deserve.
@Robert Dillon I’m wishing I was a freelancer myself …get some of them eats! What an experience!
I was boogie boarding out in California during the 70s…
Food was good too!
I’m craving a Jim’s Burgers with an greasy bag full of onion rings…. Chocolate shake! Pastrami sandwich…mmm
Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school CA ✌️
@omcorc So, my comment HAS to be a solution to this problem? I’m not seeing a solution in your comment.
A diminishing molecular oxygen atmosphere is allowing more ultraviolet energy to reach the Earth’s surface where it becomes light and then heat.
lololololololololol.
@Bonzi Buddy like fr more ultraviolet energy lol
Just like COVID right?
Are you paying attention yet?
A drought in the southwest that has been going on for YEARS and is putting both the water supply and regional electricity generation at risk.
A drought in the midwest that has dramatically lowered the Mississippi and is creating challenges for a critical shipping route.
A massively powerful storm that generated energy very quickly and produced massive amounts of water output as it hit the Florida coast.
With each half degree that temperatures increase, the ability of the atmosphere to absorb moisture increases, meaning less rain… meaning more drought….
At the same time, more moisture in the atmosphere means more POTENTIAL for rainfall, such as during a large storm…. meaning storms get BIGGER….
You can deny climate change is real, but that won’t shield you from its effects.
Every year the climate gets warmer, this will get worse.
@Alan Helbling Because the atmosphere is able to absorb and retain more moisture, there is less regularly occurring rainfall, so there is less water in rivers and streams….. but because there is more moisture in the air, when a storm occurs it is more severe because there is more rain… which means you either have water shortages (drought) or you get a deluge (flood)…. there is more extreme and less “normal”. THAT is the impact of climate change. It’s not one or the other.
weather modification
They seed the skies and that creates our weather patterns. Especially in Florida where the military jets fly and seed the sky 24/7.
It’s why Katrina was so bad. It’s why Camille was so bad. It’s why Ian was so bad. The one that hit Texas… They create the storms in the gulf. I watch them Aaaaaaalllll day…
It happens.
Climate change is real!
I guess they should’ve listened to the scientists when they were talking about global warming and climate change. It’s funny now how they’re all upset that their world is changing. Maybe if they weren’t so ignorant, they would’ve been more prepared.
Ha Ha Ha !
Ok keep laughing when you can’t get your food. So speaking of dust bowl. Did we have climate issues back then? Don’t believe it was due to “oil” back then. So what’s your solution. It’s probably God fed up with these pronouns
@shannon crow The short answer to what caused the Dust Bowl was an extended drought and poor farming methods. The following explains it better I would.
The seeds of the Dust Bowl may have been sowed during the early 1920s. A post-World War I recession led farmers to try new mechanized farming techniques as a way to increase profits. Many bought plows and other farming equipment, and between 1925 and 1930 more than 5 million acres (2 million hectares)of previously unfarmed land was plowed [source: Kershner]. With the help of mechanized farming, farmers produced record crops during the 1931 season.
However, overproduction of wheat, coupled with the Great Depression, led to severely reduced market prices. The wheat market was flooded, and people were too poor to buy. Farmers were unable to earn back their production costs and expanded their fields in an effort to turn a profit. They covered the prairie with wheat in place of the natural drought-resistant grasses and left any unused fields bare.
But plow-based farming in this region cultivated an unexpected yield: The loss of fertile topsoil that literally blew away in the winds, leaving the land vulnerable to drought and inhospitable for growing crops. In a brutal twist of fate, the rains stopped. By 1932, 14 dust storms, known as black blizzards were reported, and in just one year, the number increased to nearly 40.
But if it’s global warming then shouldn’t there be more water and not less ?
@LB J What global warming is doing is intensifying what used to be our normal weather patterns. If you’ve noticed in places where it usually rains there has been a lot more rain causing flooding. Then during the summers in the same places it’s been getting a lot hotter and lasting longer causing a lack of water in major rivers in different countries around the world. Global warming is like weather on steroids to put it simply.
Drought-starved? What does that even mean?
It means a lack of rain to replenish the river. Don’t worry, where ever you live you’ll find out over the next few years exactly what “drought-starved” means from your own personal experience.
@Christopher Spanos LOOK AT THE WORDS!
@Lotfi Bouhedjeur Mississippi River is being starved of water due to drought. Is that the title you would have preferred?
@Lotfi Bouhedjeur there’s less water than normal
the interest is up and the stock markets down and you only get mugged if you go downtown
And Climate Change isnt real????
let’s redirect this poop water west
You want to dump poop in drinking water?
@writerconsidered yes sir
Societal acculturation has not kept up with reality???
I would say put it on trucks. But the Democrats got the fuel price so high it’s insane.
@MrLivewire1970 not to mention the fact, we are getting low on our reserves, morons used to complain we should use the reserves, now that we’re using it, look at the prices now, the more we use our reserves, the higher the gas prices will get
Oil companies, not Biden! 🙄
Repent Yahwah bahsham Yahawashi is coming back droughts and famine will get worst. Nobody fears God anymore and surely he is coming back with wraith.
Florida has plenty of water. Tell them to share.
Why do these people sound dumb? Oh try wait, they’re “poorly educated” red states.
I’m sure Republicans will blame Biden for it !
“I’m here to help with managing the money!” – Brett Farve.
OMG
That’s IN Mississippi. You are ON the Mississippi…
@You Watch My Mouth got it…
For those who don’t understand the significance of this, there is another video on Youtube that explains that the United States developed it’s economic might due to having one great advantage over many nations–navigable internal shipping lanes.
@Bob Woods odd comment given the context of the story.
@Ordinary Average Guy you do know that it’s written history that the Lakota stole the land from other natives right?
And there’s lots of evidence of tribes that predate “native Americans”, what happened to them? Oh that’s right the native Americans did exactly what the English and Spanish did, which is exactly what the French and Germans did and the ancient Chinese, and the Arabs and on and on throughout all human history but your butt hurt about one single group.
@Ordinary Average Guy To the victors go the spoils.
Signs of the end of times. Pray, pray, pray!!!
Get ready for the denials and finger pointing….
derp derp derp. This stuff isn’t new. Mississippi has been this low well before Al Gore was born.
Do you believe in global warming yet?
remember when Trump said 1 degree doesnt make a difference in the environment?
☠💀🤡
Sheep
Mississippi is not drought anything the water from it is being sold and shipped to the West through pipelines.
hurricane lAN will fill it up
They need to dredge this part of the river
It gets dredged when it is needed.
Climate Change.
Repent come back to Jesus he’s coming very soon
🎶Look what they’ve done to my song, Ma. Look what they’ve done to my song🎶
Bro this is normal. It was just flooding a couple months ago. Quit trying to drum up more chaos. It’ll be flooding by next year again.
It was not flooding a couple of months ago, liar.
The exact same problem is happening in Europe and the UK. Unfortunately a significant percentage of the US public is very easily duped and because of that the fossil fuel industry’s PR campaign to “create doubt” that pollution from burning fossil fuels isn’t the cause of climate change the world is in this mess. There are still plenty of Americas who refuse to believe pollution has anything to do with this problem. Even if all pollution were to stop today it will take decades if not longer to reverse the affects. As with a fast moving freight train, you can hit the breaks but it will take quite awhile until that train comes to a stop.
So, you’re happy paying more when we didn’t have this problem a few years ago.
@doughesson I don’t think there’s anyone on the planet is happy to pay more for anything. Which problem is it that you think we didn’t have a few years ago?
At this point I feel like these supply chain shortages are manufactured shortages they are not shortages happening despite of people in Powers best efforts.
People going to pay for this, the people who are pulling the strings that is.
The US will really feel the effects when millions of people come to share our limited resources. Do not believe me? Keep an eye on the southern border.
Like the movie “WORLD WAR Z”?! 🙄🙄
Really? Is California all ready sucking it out for there waste use?
Nonsense! All this science talk is just fake news! Weather changes all the time! Remember when it was called different stuff before? How long have these “scientist” been fearmongering?! All we need is Jesus and cheap gas. Ha. We’re not falling for this fake weather stuff! We too smart!
It’s a man-made disaster.
HEY EVIL BIDEN, IT’S NOT SUPPOSED TO FEEL LIKE JULY STILL IN OCTOBER!
Unpopular comment: *climate change in action*
Look at how low this river is. This is one of the biggest rivers in the world. Major rivers & lakes all over the planet are drying up. This doesn’t just impact global shipping, but also fresh water supplies. As time passes, vast regions which have been watered by these rivers & lakes will become more & more arid, unable to support agriculture. As global temps rise, glaciers & the polar caps will melt faster & faster, dumping almost unimaginable amounts of fresh water into the world’s oceans. This enormous influx of fresh water will slow, & then eventually halt, the global oceanic currents. Warm & cold waters will cease to circulate around the planet. This is the earth’s vast, natural climate regulator. For instance, the warm Gulf Stream carries heat to northern latitudes, making Canada & northern Europe habitable for humans. Stop the Gulf Stream, stop the heat, & those regions will dive into a deep freeze, completely unable to support any but the most hardy of humans. Stop warm air from moving away from the equator, & eventually, even the mighty Amazon rainforest will become a desert. Scariest thing is, we can prepare for climate change, we can adjust for it, we can attempt to mitigate it somewhat – but we cannot stop it. It’s speed is increasing exponentially, the snowball rolling down the hill faster & faster. Honestly, the disasters are just going to get worse & worse. Some of our ancestors survived the last change 11,000 yrs. ago. Different world now. Will we do the same? Maybe a 50/50 chance. Time will tell.
EXCELLENT 👍. Our only hope is intelligent life from another planet that knows the cure! 😪🙄
Maybe if they build a volleyball court in the middle of the river it will help?
Yes
Still think Climate Change is fake?
Still voting for people who lie to you and tell you it’s fake?
Maybe you might want to start voting for those that want to try to fix it.
No trains roads and 18 wheelers in that part of America?
Sure if you don’t mind paying much more for everything and have way more road repair work and traffic.
America’s waterways helped make it a powerhouse. Shipping on water is 10x cheaper.
New Green Deal!!!
weather modification either HAARP or something else
That ain’t a photo of the Mississippi. Looks like the Cumberland
Climate change and no one wants to deal with it, just ignore the sky falling around you. Governments and corporations will never change so whats the point. Humans deserve to be wiped out at this point.
happening 15 to 20 early, get ready
Like our politicians behavior if you ignore it long enough you will be sorry!
Klaus Swaub the CIA goldfish from American Dad says we will own nothing by 2030 and be happy
#MHLivingHistory
Just a reminder:
It would be lot cheaper to start dealing with these issues ahead of time that it is to clean up after they’re already a goddamned problem. It is the biggest waster of money I have ever seen in my life.
neglect it until you have no choice but to accept that there might be a problem to deal with, the american way. it’s so much easier to stuff your wealthy friends’ pockets for doing nothing
? You got a way to make it rain? Great !
Everyone Involved in the Spraying of the Skies. Need to be Charged with Crimes Against Humanity and Life itself.💯
( That’s Your Climate Change)
Like fossil fuel companies dumping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere?
Just lay solar panels on the ground and use a windmill to push the boat… TRUMP2024
This is the river they want to divert water from?
More FAKE NEWS
These pics with a dry riverbed are oxbows coming from the main river. Total BS! To show those pics, it’s a Lie
the not so great reset
The Preacher Man Says That It’s The End Of Time. The Mississippi River She’s Going Dry.
Hank Williams Jr. Country Boy Can Survive
Climate change is a big fat ZERO!
Wyoming and Montana are having floods so, the Res River and the Platt River will be sending lots it water soon. Maybe no the Platt but another river near Wyoming.
I meant the Missouri and the Plattt Rivers are flooding now and the water should get to Mississippi River soon.
This is what happens when you destroy Earth and you ignore climate changes years and years ago !!!
PREACHER MAN SAYS IT THE END OF TIME….
AND THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER IS A GOIN DRY…..
DID SOMEONE SAY THAT?
Great, glad I’ll be dead by the time that SF weather turns into LA.
We are screwed.
Next on the menu: American Human Habitat Loss, Managed Retreat, Planetary Hospice- irreversible abrupt climate change is already here. Science illiterates and climate change denialists- conflating science facts with conspiracy theories and insufferable republican rage grievance hysterics. WE ARE THE EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENTS🌊🌊 🇺🇸🦖☄️🌊🌊
Nature putting arrogance in its place.
Yes, it’s definitely nature at work.
Now seems like a good time to divert the Mississippi to the west…
I also like the West is like let’s build a pipeline from Mississippi to west. I’m like don’t they know about drought season? They need to do what they can in their own states first, aka rebuilding more efficient infrastructure before involving other states.
But hey climate change is a hoax…esp for most Mississippians.
Let it rain Jesus🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks gas guzzling Americans for the climate change, appreciate it.
It’s almost as if the climate, is changing.
Why didn’t anyone warn us about such a thing?
Communisim it is
Well we have trucks and trains and airplanes there’s lots of other ways to move product not just the water
Maybe explain the lack of rain upriver which would raise water levels for navigation.
I worked on the river for 13 years & have seen the water levels rise & fall annually.
This year still isn’t as bad as 1988, the record low level since that data started to get tracked in 1880.
So not seeing it from 1880 til late 1900’s and it happening again in 2022 doesn’t show a pattern of uptick? Stop minimizing it
@William Lewis we can rightfully say severe droughts and rivers, like the Mississippi, were drying up long before humans ever say the Mississippi River; it’s likely happened more often than you’re “informed”; and it will continually happen no matter how much our ambitious handlers justify the taxing the poor, and forcibly redistributing the fruits of other people’s toil, long after every human is gone from the face of the Earth.
Fear of the unknown is so primal.
This is a serious serious situation. Mississippi, Colorado River, Lake Mead, Yangzi River. All these rivers and lakes are very very low. This is a huge crisis, not just national but international.
What’s the implications
To be clear, I live in Iowa in the Des Moines River valley, never seen it as low is it is today.
The judgement of God on America keep coming. Citizens needs to repent.
strange, just a few weeks ago a Noah’s flood , but still drying up ….
Which one of you 2 cheated?
where along the river is this? Above or below St. Louis, Mo./Lock & Dam Number 1?
Above or below the confluence with the Missouri River or the Illinois River?
A COMPLETE report, stating WHERE along the river it is running shallow “due to drought” would be nice. The entire Mississippi River Valley, and its major tributaries isn’t suffering from a drought, after all. Your “report” makes it sound like it is the entire length of the river. 👎
Since the depth is an issue, I can only guess it is downstream of St. Louis (Lower Mississippi region) since upstream they can (and do) stabilize/regulate the channel depth by varying the amount of water released from the pools upstream.
Gods wrath!
Stock markets down
Hank Jr was a prophet
“Drought-Starved Mississippi Slows Barge Traffic” fire the copy writer – should be “Water-Starved Mississippi Slows Barge Traffic” or “Mississippi in Severe Drought Slows Barge Traffic”
To be Drought Starved is to have too much water…..
Guess infrastructure would help huh…
Put big wheels on the barges.
You can thank the draining of the river towards the north. They are going to plug this as global warming and it most certainly is not. Look at corporations like PepsiCo and Nestlé they have drained lakes and rivers for years. And now they are doing this to the Mississippi. The United States of America is under attack
Something just doesn’t add up here!
I’m currently workin for Eutaw Construction buildin the new steel mill next door to big river steel I see this first hand everyday they are strugglin bad
And the West thought they should divert the mississippi to water a desert!
I’m surprised NBC isn’t calling the drought racist in some way or blaming it on Trump
Just like Bocephus sang! https://youtu.be/3cQNkIrg-Tk
Sooo…
Do we think [ahead] then and while the river(s) is/are so low we dredge the living crap out of them for all that we can get out before normal water levels return ?
With this winter approaching soooo fast, there will not be much more of a flow coming down to the big river from all of the tributaries that feed it – until late next spring – and that is still all dependant on how much snow is deposited on the plains and in the Rockies.
No (or little) snowpack – no spring runoff.
Pull out as much silt and sediment as we can get out before the waters return.
What we pull out, we can ship via rail to areas that have lost much topsoil from erosion up and down the high plains of this nation. The silt in that/ those riverbeds IS the topsoil that has been lost.
So, we get materials to replenish much of our nutrient depleted agricultural areas and the riverbeds have been “deepened” to better facilitate heavy spring melts.
The debris we extract can be used for a great many other things – dikes and levees and some seawall building in other areas requiring protection from storm surges and tidal forces.
New Orleans – perfect example of a great city needing the help of all of us to literally save it from drowning in the next… what..
100 years?. Yeah, wow, we built a few new “walls” there after and since Katrina but they are woefully inadequate and nowhere near what is truly needed to thwart natures advance.
We CAN get ahead of her advance, but it will take a concerted effort by all.
…… “somebody stop me !”. (Thx Mr. Carrey)
Sorry folks, I get going on these things and my mind races with the future and how good we can make it for not only ourselves as Americans, but every resident of this orb that we ALL call home.
If we continue on our current course, it would become obvious that we are ALLOWING history to repeat itself.
Have we not learned ?
Will we ever learn ?
Will [WE] go down in history only to be known as the generation(s) that did nothing for our progeny or would we rather be remembered as the Newest greatest generation that made life much better for those who follow ?
The choice is ours and ours only.
and furthermore… lol…
Many will inquire: “how ya’ gonna’ pay for it ?
Many different ways but the ONE word that comes up, for me, is – Corporate.
No privatization, but instead, “contributions to.
We supply them all with our money.
It is time for them, collectively, to help us,
as a patriotic gesture, when we need it most – right now!
What new major infrastructure [advancements] have we undertaken in the last… 50, 60 years ?
The electric grid is so antiquated, dilapidated, unreliable and prone to failure(s) – why has it not been “hardened” – AT ALL ?
… just keep stringin’ wire…
… replace it again, and again, and again…
DO IT ONCE – GET IT DONE !
Same thing with rebuilding with “sticks”, all the buildings completely destroyed by weather or other events, fire, earthquake, flood… around our entire country this year alone.
How many homes and businesses were completely destroyed – tens of thousands?
Hundreds ?
That sure is going to be a lot of material needed real soon for [rebuilding].
Better buy your plywood and 2X4’s now !
Good time to upgrade many different systems this time.
We have the need, opportunity, labor force, equipment, technology, materials and time !
Not looking for the ” next-gen”,
I’m looking to skip at least 2 to 3 “grades” ahead and utilizing “what we know now”,
as well as what is being developed for energy production beyond oil, nuclear, coal and… whatever.
Fusion power for one.
The need for oil will drop to near nil if we employ the right measures.
I am CERTAINLY NOT. GND – at all .
We all know that our current “grid” will not be capable of handling that size demand
[each day]. Soooo… ?
So much we can do.
I have thousands of projects (honest!) on my list(s).
Many that [ I ] consider to be very unique solutions for any problem facing not only our Great nation, but the world as a whole.
# 1 is WATER.
It is [there], enough for every person, animal and plant on the planet in limitless quantity.
We just have to go get it, process it and distribute it evenly around the world.
Icebergs !
That is not original or unique from me, but is what needs to be done – icebergs and filling water tanker ships with the purest water on the planet flowing from only a few places off of Greenland, to the tune of 10’s of billions of gallons spilling into the sea – never to be seen again for maybe millions of years from now.
Justaflowinintotheocean… la la la la la…
Nobody is catching a drop of it
8.5 Million Cubic Miles of the same stuff way down south.
How much does all of humanity need so desperately in so many places around the world, to grow, thrive and prosper ?
10 to 20 cubic miles out of 8.5 MILLION ?
Many navies from around the world should be towing bergs home – solve a lot of problems wouldn’t it.
I give up.
Too, too, too much think about…
Thanks for [listening] !
