The FAA is finishing a months-long public comment period on whether they should implement a ‘minimum seat size’ standard. The process was prompted by concerns over safety and whether a cabin could be evacuated in the required 90 seconds. Flyersrights.com has submitted a petition calling for a moratorium on shrinking seats.

#Airline #FAA #Flying
I recently flew Air France definitely didn’t have this problem lol
yeah i feel like most of this comes down to individual weight problem, and not so much a seat problem. i am 6’2″ and 190 lbs, i feel perfectly fine flying in economy class for 5 hours or less. for longer international flights, i always fly business with lie flat seat, but for domestic flights less than 5 hours long, i almost always fly economy.
Considering how fat our young adults are these days… everything is gonna get bigger.
Airlines were estimating Americans weight based on 1970 data. Remember that plane crash out of Atlanta? Plane was overloaded with giant fat butts; all that deep fried and processed food: Americans were an average of almost 50 lbs. MORE than 1970. Times that by the number of passengers, and the plane went down overloaded.
There’s people who are allergic to expending calories to earn a living.
So the FAA is taking public comment but there is nothing in the video to describe how to comment? Thanks NBC News
Put a bunch of fat people on that flight- make it realistic
It’s no wonder then why people are flipping out. Just crazy
This is what happens when you do regulate the airlines. Thanks Reagan!
*deregulate
And you’re exactly right!
@Brittany K yup. this all started along with “trickle down” economics and contracting out to China. Meanwhile, posters usually call out “Biden” or ‘Bernie”…………they must be still in junior high.
They’ve made them smaller to pack more people on flights so they can make more profits!
no, they’ve made them smaller and pack more people onto flights, so everyone can afford to travel quickly and efficiently via flying. taking your comment into consideration, you are certainly not the type who would pay more for more comfort, so essentially they did it for you so you could fly.
Packed sardines
Everyone please sign the petition!
No way you can get off a plane in 90 seconds these days. No way.
They will make airplanes Standing Section only in economy.
I wasn’t fond of being short growing up but HOLY CRAP i would never want to be one inch taller. I am comfortable everywhere. I feel so bad for tall guys…even I’m scrunched in a car..how do they do it!?!? Its torture.
yeh, I’m the average median height for a male (5′, 7″) but have short legs. I grad the “exit door” seat and/or reserve it; more leg room!! than the other seats in the same class!
I’m 6’2” and my legs are usually being wedged between the seat. I can’t even move my legs for a better position. Reason why I keep flights to a max 6-7 hours. It’s already hard enough for me to sleep
no matter how large you make the seats, someone will manage to overeat and overgrow outpacing seat expansion. to what degree do you say enough is enough? if they really care about safety, they need to legislate maximum passenger weight and size, much like we do with all luggage, this directly affect emergency evacuation and critical safety standards. but it’s not a popular topic because it’s too “emotional”, so they won’t do it. that goes to show how much they really care about the people as opposed to their own personal power grab.
Your obsession is hilarious
The real issue: too many Americans are morbidly obese. 🇺🇸 🍔🍔🍔
Hit them where it hurts and don’t fly. The sad part is they don’t care about your comfort so why should you continue to let them profit off of you. I haven’t flown In forever. The problem is people will continue to pay and they will continue to profit off you because they no you’re not going to do anything. What about people over 6 feet tall who need leg room?! They don’t care about people over 60, under 18 or people with disabilities, that should tell you something
I think that you should have to be able to fit in your seat. If you are to Fat to fit you cant fly. Im tired of huge people sitting next to me and there fat is squshing over on my side.
6 foot 3 with a short waist and my thigh bones do not fit in the allotted space. I either have to have my knees protruding into the space between seats, or have my knee forced into the back of the person in front of me (and their seat can’t bend back), or I have to stretch my leg out underneath the seat in front and half stand in my seat. If the seat pitch is reduced any further it will be hopeless.
It’s the American way. We met our revenue and profit goals. I’m getting a bonus. Screw you customers…but thank you for your business.
Everyone is focused on legroom, and my goodness I am 6’ 1” at least, but have you forgotten about the lavatories? My last flight was on ANA premium economy and the leg room was acceptable, not great, but certainly acceptable. Luckily I am not too wide at 168 lbs, but even so i had trouble digging for my seatbelt.
I’m 6’4 and if I don’t get a front seat In business class that has the extra legroom I have to put my legs at an angle the entire flight or else my knees are digging into the seat in front.
reserve the “Exit” door seat far left or right; it has more leg room!!
Sounds like people are Fat
Make a “comfort” rating mandatory for all planes and let the consumers choose that level of comfort they seek clearly and easily.
Why are you people listening to these LIES! SAFETY AND PROFITS ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. One of these is considered the other is NOT! TAKE A WILD GUESS! 🤔😳🤑
Space for larger people should be available by design – at a higher cost. Small people don’t take as much of a transports space and weight limit.
I hope something gets done. I flew mostly business class with larger seats and more leg room. In economy class the leg room is despicable in my opinion. The limited leg room has been shown to be detrimental to your health; I think it was blood clots in the legs. I do indeed hope improvements get enforced.
Here is the recommended clip that say it :
https://youtu.be/Ft4tomQgy98
Leave your comment there please
When our eldest daughter was stationed in Hawaii (in 2004), she sent us plane tickets to Oahu. My internal med doctor told me to wear special knee high socks, that reduce the risk of blood clots forming. We wished that we had known just how cramped those coach seats were, as we would have upgraded to business or first class. For the last 45 minutes of that flight, even the kind flight attendants were checking on me often because I couldn’t stop the silent tears streaming down my face – – from my leg and back pain!!
Wait until a Spirit Airlines type jet has to land in the Hudson… No way, will all the passengers be able to get out on time. Those seats have the worst leg room ever.
People dont realize airline is adjusting to what’s on demand. Which is CHEAP airline tickets. Thats what sells and that’s what airlines will configure it to make up for the lost revenue. Anyone can fly now thanks to low cost airline tickets now.
If you dont like it, pay first class or economy plus or whatever is the next tier. Or go for JetBlue if they fly. Cost a little more but they have the most leg space.
You cant expect to pay cheap for luxury service
Anyone remember that “standing” airplane seats? I’m sure a lot of airlines company were considering it.
The public can _”weigh in”?_
Get it?
This is what this story is ultimately about.
The average healthy weight of the average height in humans, is 180 pounds. This is the metric the airlines have used to fly for decades. I’m a student pilot and it’s really important to calculate weight to balance the plane for safe flight.
People are complaining because they have no discipline and can’t control their weight and want special treatment. Making people more comfortable will make everyone pay more and will penalise those who make an effort to maintain a healthy weight.
As it is, an obese passenger pays the same as a 115 pound passenger. That’s obese privilege.
There was a large plane crash out of Atlanta where the calculation of passenger weight was based on 1970 statistics. Americans had gained A LOT OF WEIGHT by the nineties. The overload had the plane falling out of the sky.
Some people can get elementary sick
Wtf are you talking about
Well if the FAA are studying horse manure
It’s no wonder they are not understanding what the human needs are
The airline’s in USA may be one of the leading aircraft developers. But they in quality in service as airliners in the middle East and far East Asia knows how to provide top quality services
Quantity over quality always for companies
Its all lip service until they do something.
I’m 5’5″, 155 pounds. I still don’t like being crammed in.
I wish airlines had to disclose seat width, pitch, and reclining ability BEFORE ticket purchase.
@avi8torguy 67 That website is flight specific, making comparisons a nightmare. (It also has a garbage interface.)
The airlines know their equipment, it would be simple for them to make it accessible.
@M Bryson Airlines have hundreds and hundreds of airplanes. Some like types have different configurations, and last minute swaps can happen. If you want more space, but a first class ticket! Period!
@avi8torguy 67 It’s unfortunate that corporations have bootlicking shills like you making lame excuses for them.
Name one airline that has hundreds of different configurations. Just one.
@M Bryson Not hundreds of configurations. Hundreds of airplanes. Each fleet type can have 2-3 different subfleets. I remember AA had 767s in Hawaii, Domestic and International configurations. One could be subbed in and seat layouts could be different affecting legroom. If you want more space, pay for it! You must me a democrat, you want something for free without paying for it. Thats not how it works. Remove seats, CASM goes up so do ticket prices. Airlines have tried removing seats and giving extra room dozens of times, it’s failed every time. People don’t want to pay for it. You probably failed economics in high school.
The FAA should either require a true mix of non-professional passengers for evacuation tests or they should come clean and ban everyone under 18, over 60, and/or the disabled from flying.
I’m disabled. I’d likely not make it off a contemporary plane in under 90 seconds given the number of passengers packed in.
They also don’t take into account the people who refuse to leave their carry-ons behind.
I noticed pre-Covid how many times the airline I was leaving on offereD FREE stowage for your carry-on at the gate!
i always walked off a plane with back and leg cramps that is why i stopped flying. the wait, the cancellations and the lack of amenities for flying is such a turn off. i remember when flying you got full meals, whole drinks, blankets, pillows, leather seats. these airlines today have really min-maxed their entire business to the fullest, i will not support that with my money. flying first class is even worse because you are paying sometimes 10x as much for a little more. nope
Its no where NEAR 10x more. Just looked up Atlanta to Las Vegas about 2 weeks out. A coach ticket could be had for $250, and first class for $850…not bad deal at all
Not only are the seats getting smaller. They are overselling tickets and every flight is at 100% capacity.
I’m watching this as I flown here on a business trip with pain in my knee caps from an earlier flight.
Excuse me! You can not test how fast people exit your plane using only certain types. That is not true or honest. You are lying.
I just took a flight this week. Because my original flight was cancelled, I was given another flight with a seat all the way in the back of the plane. The absolute worst flight I have ever been on. The seat didn’t recline, and my knees were cramped against the seat in front of me for 3 1/2 hours. My second flight I was upgraded to a more comfortable seat. Thankfully I could read the tea leaves for the two flights home, and upgraded my seats before checking in… This shouldn’t be necessary, and there are no considerations for passengers comfort or health.
This is how they squeeze a little more money out of you. It’s an art form.
Far to much room. The airlines are so generous. They probably have schills sending in comments like that.
Because if there’s one thing everbody can agree on, it’s that being cramped up in an airplane is wonderful. If you’re not completely out of your mind, please let them know.
I’m surprised they don’t try to stack you in 6 high on gurneys.
Airlines’ “progress” is the setback in passengers’ well being.
The evacuation test is bogus if they don’t use accurate passenger representations. They could have used younger people in padded body suits to simulate overweight persons, or taken a person and wrapped knees and ankles and elbows in duct tape and waist/hips in shrink wrap to simulate elderly with mobility issues, etc, if they were afraid actual disabled persons would get injured in the tests. They could have asked smaller adults under 5′ tall to simulate older kids, etc. Think!!!
Anyone overweight should buy two seats, and if they don’t, they should not be served food.
As others have said here in these comments, I’ve stopped flying altogether because of cramped conditions on airplanes. The last comfortable seat I had on an airliner was on a DC-8. Of course that was before airline deregulation so they didn’t compete on price and had to compete with service and comfort.
And then you have people who are just flat out saying I’m not going to fly because I do have a disability I do have a service dog and I’m not going to be uncomfortable. If I want to go somewhere I will drive where I can stop where I want to stop eat what I want to eat and I don’t have to be stuck 30,000 plus feet in the air and a long cylindrical tube with a Karen or a Darren or both or multiples of either with no way to get away from it. I refuse to pay someone to make me uncomfortable.
Focus on comfort. The rest will follow.
every time i get on a plane, i spot the giant fatties at the gate and pray to Jesus they don’t sit on me
on their way to LA to appear on “Maury”? or just the buffet at the Casino??
Sounds like you have a fetish
Fly anywhere outside of the states, you realize just how little U.S. airlines care about their customers. It’s a national embarrassment.
Remember that plane crash of an overweight plane out of Atlanta because airlines were “estimating” the average weight of an American based on 1970 data?? I usually have an open seat next to mine (3 hour flights only) Calgary to Salt Lake to LA or Kalispell to SLC, transfer to Ontario, Ca airports. One time I made a flight via Seattle (bad idea); plane full, two guys next to me that exceeded 300 lbs. each. I was the cream cheese between the two slices of Wonder Boy bread. I can’t IMAGINE a flight to HK that’s eleven hours and tolerating THAT. 3 hours I can handle.
I thought that morbidly obese people had to purchase two coach seats for themselves!! That needs to be unforced!! Personally, I don’t know how you were even able to tolerate that shorter flight!!
Maskoffweb made me happy today on youtube and I promise him to tell world he’s a great person
I expect better from the FAA on that evacuation video. the first monkey wrench would be good people going BACK to assist someone panicking and/or a disability, elderly being confused, which would cluster f…k the entire operation. And other people only thinking about themselves and what bag they left with their extremely important……cell phone.
Sardines! I’m very small and over 20 years ago I was very uncomfortable.
I like the DC 10. Very comfortable.
Unfortunately the last DC10 left the skies 20 years ago. But yes the DC10 was very comfortable, especially in First Class
If you’re going to let obese people who are too wide for current seats keep flying, airlines better make bigger and fewer seats. At least provide bigger seat options at a higher price point because why should someone who’s 150 lbs pay as much as someone who’s 300 lbs? They charge extra for luggage above a certain weight limit
Stop the greed, my god.. These are human beings not cargo.
Leaves space for an airline to make accommodations, have a different goal (not max people but max satisfaction among customers), execute a better and comfortable experience, can charge more money but still accessible, long term may make more profits or similar to the sardine method
Yeah I’ve stopped flying
This is why I support JetBlue buying Spirit.
Before they approve this, they should make the airline board members and executives have 40 hours fully booked international flights back-to-back on the cheapest economy class seat and see how they like it. And don’t give them aisle seats.
Prices gonna go up to cover fuel, etc. Less passenger, is less income for the airlines. Watch price go up if they make it bigger and they lose seats from this.
So again I ask, why won’t we invest in high speed rail? At least then you could walk to the other cars and do things, instead of sitting in a flying pressurized fart box like a tin of sardines.
It is just greed!! Untill someone sues for having a stroke due to a DVT from a non ergonomic seating position.
If you want more room couldn’t you just buy First Class or Premium Economy?
@avi8torguy 67 or people will just choose not to fly as many, many people have posted.
@Sandra Mollett If they are forced to remove seats to create more room, prices will go up regardless. Reduce seats, CASM goes up. Simple math. I flew about 11 legs in 4 days last week, every single flight was full. I paid extra for extra legroom, exit seats, or I really treated myself and bought First Class JFK-LA ($3500 one way), had a fully flat bed seat and was super comfy. So if you want more room pay for it! You cant have a mansion for the price of a condo.
I am sick of it. Before to long they will have people standing for an entire flight !!
Fix the dam head rest. No need to push the head forward
At 6 foot 4 tall, if the person in front of my reclines, my knees get. crushed. My knees are pushed up against the back of the seat in front of me. The seats are more narrow than ever, I don’t want my body touching the person’s arm next to me. It is absolutely horrible. No way to get out of the plane quickly. Now the airlines are charing higher fees for a seat next to the emergency exit door which has more space. The airlines made more profits than this last year while treating consumers like garbage. I only fly if I absolutely have to. Next, they want to have us standing like cows in line for slaughter. SICK
No one under 18 or 60 and no one with disabilities on FAA evacuation test? the Pre-boarding for every flight has at least 20 people from that group!
More leg room sure, but I don’t think seat width needs to be increased, that should serve as a grimm reminder to buy a water instead of a diet coke at Hudson News
They are using people on a test room, who are prepared and ready to evacuate a plane. People barely are able to get up when it’s time to leave the plane upon departure. Especially being that I live in Florida. We have a lot of babies and elderly that fly in when I’m going back home. It’s no way you could tell me that any flight I’ve been on in the past 10 years could’ve exited in 90 seconds. I hope they do put a minimum on pitch and seat width. 28 inches is torture and why I prefer JetBlue who has the biggest standard outside of Southwest.
I flew on frontier recently. The guy next to me-I felt every hot breath of his on my face. I dropped my phone and there wasn’t even room to bend to pick it up. It was traumatizing a little.
I’m 6’5” and feel absolutely miserable when flying. But at the end of the day- they have no obligation to pander to your comfort. If you don’t like it, either upgrade your seat or don’t fly at all.
I’m 6’6 and I don’t expect airlines to accommodate people my size, but seats today are made for midgets, it’s getting ridiculous, I usually try to get the exit row seat because guaranteed if I get a regular seat some little brat will be in front of me slamming the seat into my knees.
Here’s a question, should the Airline companies compensate for American’s poor eating habits and larger waistlines? Active and fit people like me don’t have much of an issue flying in the current setup.
Why no link to FAA?
I love how the video’s details have a hundred links to NBC stuff but no link to the FAA’s comments page on the issue they’re reporting on.
Make that money! What are u going to walk there!?! Now boarding sardines! If airlines could make you sit on each others laps, they would. Plus baggage fees! Rake in that dough!!!
Hahahahaha! There is NO WAY a plane could be evacuated in 90 seconds 😂😂😂 look how long it takes to deplane at the end of every flight
Profit over everything that’s the American way
We stopped fly😢due to the small sitting
I’m 6’4” so am stuck buying business or first. What I do understand is why people who are obese don’t do the same? You can do something about weight, you can’t do much about height.
FENTANYL OVERDOSES BECOMES #1CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG U.S. ADULTS, AGES 18-45
If my destination is accessible by car, I will just do the road trip thing. The airlines lost my business long ago and the types of people that are currently causing problems on the airlines are not people that I would prefer sit next to.
I want to hear more from that first Nurse Ms. Brumfield
This is what happens when you allow airlines to merge, shrinking the amount of carriers now to 4. It’s going to get worse and they could care less about any of us.
The reason you’re required to put your seat back up is to enable a speedier emergency evacuation of the cabin. If those 3 inches are a safety concern, then what about the other 4+ inches that have been taken away by airlines? If one, then the other. There’s simply no arguing that this does not impact safety.
The #seatsize is important, yes, but I would rather they measure the seat-back width. Shoulders take up more space than your butt when you’re sitting down. A demand for the #airlinesafteytest to use people from a wide variety of ages and abilities should be mandatory! When have you ever climbed aboard an airplane and found only able-bodied adults between 20 and 60 years of age? Fill the plane with a flight headed to Disneyland, THEN perform the safety test.
*#Airlines** **#SeatSize** **#FAA*
Airlines are as greedy as any other company but they’re just avoiding the real issue
If exit rows have to have more room to evacuate safely, then that’s what it should be for regular rows for people to get out safely. People are also getting taller (15% of American men are at least 6 feet tall, that is not insignificant a demographic)
Tell Americans to lose weight and not be so disgustingly fat, they wouldnt have such a problem fitting into a seat. Humans are not meant to be the size of cows.
I agree, however change to more roomy seats will have the costs transferred to the consumer. As long as customers purchase reduced comfort and size it will continue to be offered by the service provider. Regulation will prevent low-income persons from flying.
They tag your ear then send you down the chute. Like cattle. I’m so glad I don’t travel any more. I remember when you got 2 checked bags as part of your fare. Corporations run the US
Of course they are not listening. It’s all about the dollar for them. Do they realize if the seating was more comfortable they may have repeat customers??!!!
Get actual travellers with bags for the test. It will take 10 minutes to leave the plane, and people will die if enough think it’s real. I’m not joking. You can’t just get average people, because travellers aren’t average people. They’re crazy entitled rule breaking fools. They somehow take up all of the luggage room on a flight before the flight is filled, so you know they’re grabbing all those bags as they get off.
I flew recently 11 hrs and it was an absolute nightmare! I barely fit into the seat and coukdn’t move the whole trip. The seats are too narrow and no leg space. I’d rather have a narrow armrest than the current wide one (which contains the tray & entertainment console) very few people use the entertainment system, most people use their phones / laptops. With a narrow armrest you’ll get a few cm more on the seat
