Two different holidays on two different days with two seperate histories, but ultimitely about similar things.
The first Canadian Thanksgiving reportedly took place in the late 16th century, and was intended as a way to be thankful for a safe voyage to the new world. It evolved into a religious holiday and a day to celebrate the fall harvest, and an official date for the holiday was first set as November 6th back in 1879, but it varied wildly until 1957 when it was set as the second Monday of October.
The first American Thanksgiving occured when settlers held a harvest festival in the early 17th century. Local Wampanoag Native Americans came upon the settlement festivities. The two parties remained peaceful and ultimately broke bread to celebrate together. This ended in a treaty between both parties that lasted some 50 years. Thanksgiving was then celebrated largely in New England and spread to other colonies before being proclaimed an official holiday in 1798 by the Continental Congress. Some states enjoyed the holiday, others (namely Southern States) thought it to be a Northern/political holiday or an over-reach of government powers and thus did not celebrate it.
